I never put a lot of stock int he guru/genius label.


If you have a HoF type of qb you will look great. If you have a bunch of FA or 5th and 6th round picks you won't look as smart.

Giving the qb time to learn what life in the NFL is like sure helps too. Toss a kid out there in his 1st or 2nd year on a mediocre team and his is going to struggle more times than not. Let him sit and learn and then play on a contending team and your "genius factor" goes up 20 points.

I went on record a few weeks back in another thread that I don't believe Mike McCarthy is a QB guru for the same reasons stated in the article.

I also don't believe he is any kind of offensive genius.
I believe the Packers would be better served having a real offensive coordinator (not just in name only) who runs the offense and does the play calling.
McCarthy is head coach of the Green Bay Packers and he should be just that.
If he wants to be a QB coach or offensive coordinator then the Packers should hire a head coach.

I DO consider Mike a QB guru.

IMHO, he developed Aaron, who had looked kind of shitty in the NFL previously, rejuvenated Favre's career, made Rich Gannon from a career journeyman into a pro bowler and even made Aaron Brooks look good briefly. He's been around some good QBs and some that haven't panned out.

I do criticize him as a HC and an OC, but that is separate from my high regard for his QB school.

I think McCarthy being a QB guru has more to do with the Head than Body. He knows how to teach the offense and playbook, and see when a QB does not have the mental ability. Which is why both Coleman and Brohm were let go so quickly while McCarthy kept around guys like Flynn and Harrell who both were less physically gifted than the others.

But in the end, not all QBs have the physical tools to play in the NFL and NO amount of coaching can change that.
