NEW BERLIN -- It's the chance of a lifetime, and Greg von Rueden has led a challenging life. The 15 year old is battling an aggressive form of bone cancer.
He's not alone.
Greg has a close group of friends and relatives. Many of them wear yellow to show their support. Friday night, Greg switched his colors to 'green and gold,' becoming junior captain of the Green Bay Packers in their first preseason game.
"[The referee] just asked if i went to a Packers game before. And I haven't," Greg explained.
The teen's face lit up at the chance to shake players' hands at the 50-yard line.
"The only person that talked to me was Aaron Rodgers. [He said], 'I like your jersey,' because I was wearing his jersey," Greg said.
The teen's family watched on in amazement, and not just by the atmosphere of a filled stadium.
A week and half before the coin toss, doctors amputated Greg's leg.
"Just to watch him walk out there, and then to hear all the people clapping, it just puts a tear in your eye," said Sharon von Rueden, Greg's mom.
The past year has been full of ups and downs. Cancer thought to be gone returned with a vengeance. Throughout those tough times, Greg kept his head in the game.
"Every different particular type of challenge that comes his way. It just doesn't seem to phase him. And that he's like 'ok, that's what he do,'" explained Dennis von Rueden, Greg's father.
