Chris Ault isn't exactly an every day household name when it comes to the NFL. Lately, however, he's about as popular as all of this read-option buzz that's suddenly taken the league by storm. Ault is known to be the innovator behind college football's "pistol' offense which involves much read-option play from the quaterback and [...]

Keep those updates coming, Mintbacondrivel.

I'm on record as wishing the Packres would go to the old split backs formation with Lacy AND Franklin/Harris, but assuming that ain't gonna happen, the pistol is a decent thing to consider. It wouldn't be the same as the Niners, as Rodgers can't quite run like Kaepernick, and we certainly wouldn't want him to. However, IMO, the main benefit of the pistol is to give a team with a less than dominant O Line an edge. Thus, I'd like to see some use of it.

Actually, they could also go wildcat with Cobb. I just don't see them doing any of this, because their emphasis is on throwing deep, not wasting precious clock running with the ball.

My point was that you can use the pistol differently than the Niners and other teams use it - specifically to avoid a pass rush, much like the shotgun, but still keeping the prospect of a straight I formation type handoff available. I don't want Rodgers risking injury by running around like Kaepernick; I'm also not thrilled with taking him off the field by using the wildcat. I have no problem with the long passing game even with the probable much enhanced RB situation. I just think the pistol might be a good way to give Rodgers at better look at the field while still keeping Lacy/Franklin/Harris as a threat.

I have no doubt Rodgers could do this very successfully, but it would be a bad idea. The athleticsim difference is not much, but I want Rodgers protected more. It only takes one bad hit to derail a career.

We have been so blessed to get 2 hof type qb's back to back. Farve played 18 years. If Rodgers does the same, thats 36 years and two guys. I know I am getting way ahead of myself, but over the course of that time, the rest of the division will go through over a hundred all together:)

Edit: I just remembered, Farve did not play all 18 in GB, but still the point stands.

To the OP... yes we can use the pistol formation but no we will not be running out of it.

Not with Rodgers at the helm.. the run option from the QB will be utilized until a high dollar QB goes down for the season. RGIII's injury is going to affect him.. and soon another.. where as they will use it less.

It is the primary reason the option isn't part of the pro game for the last couple decades.. because teams overvalue a QB and overpay them (glory boys), teams don't want to expose them to additional hits.

It would be foolish to deploy this with Rodgers.. IMO.

What the hell is wrong with just manning up about the game, establishing a traditional running game and then actioning off it? It is not hard and it has been effective for decades.. we just lack the stones to do it consistently. Why expose an elite passer to hits in option?

The run option from the QB will pass.. the contract market will dictate it out of the game.

beast (35m) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (36m) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (37m) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (4h) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (5h) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (5h) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (7h) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (7h) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (7h) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (9h) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (11h) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (17h) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (18h) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (18h) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (18h) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (18h) : Game not over yet
beast (19h) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (19h) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (19h) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (19h) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (20h) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21h) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21h) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21h) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21h) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21h) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach. (via @tompelissero )
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Looks like Lions OC Ben Johnson is going to be the Bears coach
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : TD but another failed 2 pt conversion!
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Ravens still alive, but barely
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Or not...BUT THAT CATCH BY NACUA
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : WE MAY HAVE BEEN PREMATURE KANATA
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Time to make dinner
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Ouch!!!! Dagger for the Eagles
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : DAGGER
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : pass plays
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Seems some of their passes are too deep. Reminds me of MLF as well.
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Oren Burks with a clutch pass break up...I will now light myself on fire
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : a run on 2nd down and 17 from McVay? So that's where MLF gets it from!
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Do or die time for the Rams
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Kicking field goals are impressive
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : Oh that might be a backbreaker
Mucky Tundra (19-Jan) : That's what I thought too, just wasn't sure
TheKanataThrilla (19-Jan) : Kicking doesn't make much sense
