The Packers parted ways with one of their opening-week defensive starters from 2012, placing linebacker D.J. Smith on waivers Wednesday. According to the league's official transactions, the 24-year-old Smith was waived with a "failed physical' designation. Smith started the first six games of 2012 at middle linebacker for the Packers, recording 39 tackles. However, he

I did not expect him to make this year's roster. That was a horrific knee injury. I appreciate how solid he was in 2011 reserve role. He did well. Wish him the best!

So he wasn't big enough or tough enough when we drafted him? Or when he played moderately well in '11? If it really is an injury thing - long term damage, that's one thing, but I bet either this season or next, D.J. Smith resurfaces with some other team and plays solid.

I think both Saine and Smith are injury related cuts.

The Packers gave them the off-season to try and rehab.

This doesn't mean their careers are over, as someone else said, they will probably keep working at getting 100% and will end up on an NFL roster somewhwere.

Timing is everything for these young guys trying to make it.

Who knows what will happen in TC and pre-season, one or both may just end up back with The Packers.

Anybody remember "Whisper" Goodman.

He was cut but stayed in Green bay working out hoping to get another chance, I don't think he was ever resigned, but he stayed in green bay a couple of years hoping to get another shot.

The Packers are going in the right direction. And you can forget any chance of the Packers drafting Five Nine Tryann Mathieu (sp?) too. The guy wasn't even that good. Four interceptions?

Unlike Saine who I expect to get a shot with the Packers when healthy, I don't think DJ will. He just doesn't fit.
