It's unclear how much of an interest the Packers have in bringing back RB Cedric Benson, but it appears they're willing to meet with him to see how much progress he has made with the Lis Franc fracture in his foot.

Is it genuine interest or is it just a pre-draft smokescreen? That's the question to ponder about running back Cedric Benson visiting the Packers on Wednesday. Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that Benson is scheduled to go to Green Bay for a meeting with the Packers, the team he played five games with last season

I respect his drive, but the guy is done.

He did nothing to make us any more dynamic. And when he was a weapon, like McCarthy did with Cobb -- his usage was wayyy too obvious.

Plus DuJuan Harris is the future of this team, and nobody except James Starks and the RB we draft should take any touches away from him.

If he is healed up I would not mind them giving him a tryout. The contract would need to be incentive based.

For the sake of discussion, let’s consider this a smokescreen.

The running back to watch is Johnathan Franklin. I've list him in scenarios before, but there's a buzz about him. I know longer believe he falls to Green Bay with their second pick. They either need to take him at No. 26 or trade back into early round two. They risk losing him to Denver at No. 28. You also have Indianapolis and Pittsburgh that may want him.

Hypothetically, the Steelers could decide to move out of No. 17 by trading with San Francisco. The 49ers want to move up and perhaps Pittsburgh is targeting Franklin. They'd feel better about moving that far back, if they think Green Bay is content with Cedric Benson or they’re targeting somebody in rounds 2-4. That's why I think (more like hope) it could be a smokescreen because Franklin's looking like the first or second back off the board. He’s a great pass protector, a good receiver, and he can run between the tackles. He’s an every down running back. Those players just don’t grow on trees.

It’s just a name to ponder, but the buzz about him seems to coincide with Green Bay’s visit with Cedric Benson.

I would not be surprised at all if CB's visit was a feign by GB to try and throw other teams off. If so I say great job!

with how big the offseason roster is nowadays,

why not?

he'll play for minimum, can cut him with no cost, and he knows the playbook.

assuming we don't draft a RB high.

I refuse to believe the Harris hype.. its the same thing we've heard with Starks and Green.

There is absolutely ZERO downside in signing him and bringing him in for camp. He either makes the team in that case he would earn his minimum salary, or he doesn't and we don't have to pay him a dime. At minimum he is competition, at best, he is the answer.

The reality is, even Peterson would have hard time with our pour run blocking. If McCarthy commits to not running the outside Zone, gets our guys blocking more forward instead of lateral, and commits to it, any of our guys could do the job. None of them are any less than Edgar or Dorsey were.

If he came in for acupuncture, I could very likely get him through the season with it, but I'm not sure he knows about these sort of alternatives. I just don't think the foot will hold up for an entire season. Don't think Ted's very high on him either.
