When the Green Bay Packers hired Ted Thompson as general manager in 2005, he brought a vision with him cultivated from time spent as a member of Ron Wolf's front office in the 1990s.

I was just thinking as I read that article: What would Thompson's career have been like if he hadn't been fortunate to have Aaron Rodgers fall to him and smart enough to snag him? What would Wolfe's career have been like if he hadn't traded to get Brett Favre?

Arguably pretty mediocre in both cases IMO.

What if DT Justin Harrell and WR Terrence Murphy didn't get career ending injuries...

Yes Harrell had a history of injuries but he kept coming back from them better and better until his back injury that he got with the Packers. Would of Harrell put the DL over the top? He played great in college and the OLs couldn't stop him.

Murphy was very raw and had a lot to learn but in his short time he flash more raw potential than Greg Jennings and could of turned into Thompson best WR. Jennings came in ready to go where Murphy had a lot to learn still but he probably would of with Driver, who's with coaches has done a good job of coaching up these young guys.

Yeah, playing the "what if" game is silly, imo. It can be interesting to think about for a moment, I guess, but overall pointless.

I view drafting Rodgers as a gift from twenty or so other teams, Minnesota twice bitten. But that draft was the beginning of the rift between Saint Brett and the TT/MM regime. I really don't understand the arrogance of Favre on this issue because he was the one threatening retirement every year and like good managers, TT/MM protected the franchise.

Although, at the time of the Rodgers pick, the Packers were a perennial playoff team, and if memory serves - a defensive lineman or linebacker would have been a need.

But back on topic - trading down and gathering picks is how Uncle Ted restocked the barren shelves that the Sherminator emptied. I'm not going to argue with how the Packers got their 4th Vince Lombardi trophy. I wouldn't be surprised if we traded back into the early second round and get an extra third for our first round pick. Drafting in the late 20's every year is a minor problem for a capable GM. We all should probably just say thanks for keeping us there.

typically loading up with picks from the 5th round and down doesn't do a team like GB a whole lot of good. The players tend to be developmental players most of the time. They may stick with teams with lesser quality players but often doesn't have much impact in GB.

Whether Ted moves up or down, I'm hoping he bats about .875 in this years draft.
