Pat Summerall dies at 82

He was always one of my favorite broadcasters.

Summerall grew up in Florida and played his college football at Arkansas, where he was a standout as an offensive and defensive end, as well as a kicker. In 1952, the Lions took him with the 45th overall pick in the NFL draft.

He was the voice of the NFL during my childhood. RIP

Sad to hear this. Always loved his commentating and his style of not beating you over the head with useless information.

I remember the days prior to Madden when Summerall was still a great listen... Madden brought him fame, but a good percentage of the time also diminished the broadcast with his over the top maddenisms and slobbering over certain players. Summerall called it and allowed the game itself to speak just as loudly. I don't think I could take Madden with just about all other sportscaster.

Also it was nice to remember that Summerall learned from probably one of the most underrated listens in my lifetime.. Ray Scott. Albeit I remember him more for Brewers radio than Packers/NFL games.... at least real football games, the stint for the Vikings radio wasn't really football. ;)

The two broke into announcing at roughly the same time, with Summerall joining CBS as an NFL color commentator in 1962 and Michaels doing some Lakers games in the 60s. Michaels said he remembers Summerall telling him that announcer Ray Scott (who called many Packers games, including the Ice Bowl in 1967) was someone who influenced his work.
