We know Ted Thompson covets his draftpicks and it's usually a rarity for him to trade up unless there is a guy he has to have. From his history we know that he is usually pretty willing and interested in trading down if the value is right.

This years draft seems to be one of alot of depth at a lot of positions, including RB, S, DE, etc. I feel like if there was any year to trade out of the first this would be it!

So my question is IF Thompson were to trade out of the first round, who do you think some potential trading partners would be and what kind of value could he get? Also who would he aim for in the draft after trading down?

I think trading out of round 1 for a high 2 and then probably packaging some picks for another 2 or 3 pick. Packers don't need to accumulate picks, they need talent more than bodies. Packers have a solid core players, meaning the top 40-45 positions are locked.

I have hit on this topic in other threads. When I look at a draft board I usually look past our pick to see who and what kind of talent is projected to be on the board that the Packers could have taken.
On all the mock draft boards I have seen there doesn't seem to be a big drop off and quite a few players at various positions available from when we are scheduled to pick at #26 and around #40. So it works for Ted to trade down if he can find a partner.

I think the partner will be a team that has signed one of these veteran QB's that has a couple years left that allows them to not have to use an early 1st on a quarterback. So if you only see Geno Smith off the board by the time our pick comes up it's a good likelihood someone will offer a trade and get Barclay or Emanual closer to where they should be taken anyhow.

On the other hand if teams jump in earlier and three QB's come off the board before we pick that should leave a player sitting there nobody thought would still be around.

It will be an interesting couple of days for sure.

Never say never, but I don't really expect Thompson to trade out of the first round. Going either up or down at some point later could easily happen depending on how things go. It's always an interesting 2-3 days, this year no less/no more than usual IMO.

As long as you get back to building that depth the year after.

Anyway, I find it very hard to say anything about trading up or down when you're picking this late. You can take a guess as to where players will go and who wants those players in the first 5-10 picks, but you just never know after that.

Some talented players are bound to fall and if one of those high profile pass rushers, a guy like Cooper or Warmack, maybe a safety like Vaccaro or TE Eifert falls into the 20s, we might just trade up to get one of those.

Or we might just see who drops far enough for us to pick them at 26.

Or maybe there won't be anyone that interesting around and we trade back into the 2nd...

Ted's shown us that all options are in play by trading up for a guy like Matthews, staying put for Bulaga and Sherrod and trading down and picking Nelson.

There are so many things that can happen before our pick, who knows what they are. I wouldn't mind Ted Thompson trading down, as I believe there will be a number of quality players in round 2. The scenerio above, ending up with 3 number 2 picks would be good, hopefully. I don't know or care how it would happen but I would like to see us get 2 of Hunt, Gholston, or Kruger for our DL if Ted Thompson thinks their worthy when he picks.

Ted is ALL about value. Even if we don't need many players, he'll still trade back as a matter of general principle. If anything, he'll stockpile extra picks for next year.

Another surprise would be if he traded players, like Jermike for instance. Or Hawk. Anything's possible.

I think very, very high. The value of this draft is in rounds two and three. If you can pickup an extra three for moving down 10-15 spots, then I think you pull the trigger. There are exceptions, of course. Perhaps D.J. Fluker is available and Green Bay believes Bryan Bulaga is a left tackle. That changes your thinking. Maybe Kenny Vaccaro falls or you love Margus Hunt. Frankly, I could see them jumping up for Star Lotulelei, if he were to fall out of the top 10.
