The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft will take place two weeks from today. That's a good thing. Trades are sure to shake up the order of round one, but no trades will be projected in this first-round mock. Things just get messy when projecting trades. This mock will be updated in a week [...]

I have been a little more caught up in who GB should draft this year than I have in the past. It is impossible to guess who will be available at 26. I am going back to my old boring routine of saying let's wait and see. Someone with a higher value all most always drops down to GB as other teams take someone with a lower value who will fill their needs and scheme. (Like MN taking Ponder at 13! )

I guess I can be on board with a safety. At least it's defense.

If you bunched the DL, OL, RB, S, TE, and any other positions discussed here lately and went BPA at one of these spots I doubt Cypien is at the top of that list.

It's likely names like Ertz, Hunt, Minter, and probably a player nobody expects to fall to us still being on the board. Cypien looks like he will be a good player but I would be careful of a small school player that early.

I think it would be wise to use the 1st round for a player with no major injury history, no goofy character issues, and, has gone up against the best competition and proven themselves.

I'm warming to Ertz because Finley will probably have a good year and want to hit the market and Ted Thompson won't be stuck having to bow down and eat more than he's worth.

We have greater needs, but this bullshit with Finley disgusts me so much I'd be tempted to address it.

I'd prefer going with DL in the first round but the way things are shaping up it doesn't seem like there's going to be first round talent there based on all the mocks I've looked over. I am warming up to the idea of S and drafting OL can't hurt.

I'm going to throw out some options I've been pondering.

Trade Scenario: Arizona calls and offers a package of picks No. 38 and No. 69 for No. 26 and No. 122.

The Packers agree.

A couple of scenarios to look at then...

Scenario 1: The Safety option
No. 38 -- Eric Reid, S, LSU/Matt Elam, S, Florida/Jonathan Cyprien, S, Florida International
No. 55 -- Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
No. 69 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- William Gholston, DE Michigan State

Scenario 2: The Jesse Williams option
No. 38 -- Jesse Williams, DT, Alabama
No. 55 -- Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
No. 69 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State

Scenario 3: The Le'Veon Bell or Eddie Lacy option
No. 38 -- Le'Veon Bell, RB, Michigan State or Eddie Lacy RB, Alabama
No. 55 -- Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
No. 69 -- Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse
No. 88 -- William Gholston, DE, Michigan State

Scenario 4: The Zach Ertz option
No. 38 -- Zach Ertz, TE, Stanford
No. 55 -- Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
No. 69 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State

Scenario 5: The Derek Sherrod is a bust option
No. 38 -- Terron Armstead, OT, Arkansas-Pine Bluff
No. 55 -- Shamarko Thomas, S, Syracuse
No. 69 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- William Gholston, DE, Michigan State

Do you want a wide receiver within the top 100?

Look at Markus Wheaton from Oregon State. He's a great fit in this offense and there doesn't seem to be a buzz about him. I'm guessing he goes round three, but I wouldn't fret over him at No. 55.

Do you want Tyler Eifert?

The Tyler Eifert Scenario
No. 26 -- Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
No. 55 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State

You'll probably have to take him at No. 26. The same applies for Margus Hunt.

The Margus Hunt Scenario
No. 26 -- Margus Hunt, DE, SMU
No. 55 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State

We could also get into late 3rd-Round running backs with Stepfan Taylor, Andre Ellington, and Joseph Randle. The opens the door for S/C, S/DE, TE/C, TE/S, DE/S, DE/C combos.

Just two more options to chew on...

The Byran Bulaga is a Left Tackle Scenario
No. 26 -- D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
No. 55 -- Johnathan Franklin, RB, UCLA
No. 88 -- Phillip Thomas, S, Fresno State

The I Want Nasty Scenario
No. 26 -- D.J. Fluker, OT, Alabama
No. 55 -- Barrett Jones, C, Alabama
No. 88 -- Stepfan Taylor, RB, Stanford

Based on these, you can get an idea of which players I think are logical fits, and where Green Bay may draft them. Personally, I'd like to see Matt Elam, Barrett Jones, Jesse Williams, and Johnathan Franklin/Le'Veon Bell. Unfortunately, I can't fathom a scenario where that one occurs.

Wow Porky, you put a lot of thought into this! I have been of the opinion there will be just as good of a player at 38 as 26 having looked over these boards.

I could see a team willing to trade that won't go low for a QB but come back at 26 for one and based on the talent still around below 40 Ted would jump on this. I can see 3 QB's (Barclay and Emanuel for sure) going sometime around our pick and before 40 and that would leave players on the board that would help our cause also.

Deep draft with potential trade partners and Ted doing his magic. I think he mops up this year. I like your #2 option the best. It makes us bigger, deeper, and better up the middle on both sides of the ball.

As many guys we have ending up on crutches lately that couldn't hurt.

Either scenario 2 or 5 would be fine by me.
Nice piece of work BTW.

If they get a starting Safety and Center in this draft, I have to think a Super Bowl might be possible. Well, if that inadequate Daryn Colledge replacement can up his game to Colledge's level, then it's a lock.

I appreciate the work that went into it, and while I kinda like the idea of a trade down like that, I'd be very surprised if Thompson does. However, NO THANKS to any of the above. You have a lot of poor choices for positions, and even more poor choices for players within those positions. First of all, you have no mention of an OLB. I wouldn't expect an OLB as the top pick, but given the scenario, somewhere in those four I certainly would expect one. The Jesse Williams option comes the closest, as a D Lineman is likely the top pick. However, I think Williams may be gone by the 38th pick, and even if he's there, I think we pick somebody else over him. Bell and Lacey as RBs? No Thanks. Any center, very much no thanks, and I don't like Barrett Jones if we did get a center - NFL centers these days are generally converts from other O Line positions. Safety: Aside from the fact that it is a lot less of a need than the front seven, the Packers have never liked big brusing safeties - preferring to go with smaller coverage guys. Almost all of those seen by the experts as the best are basically the wrong kind from the Packer perspective. As for O Line, to my own lament, the Packers still have the ZBS, and thus are not likely to take a huge road grader OT. I doubt they see Sherrod as a bust or long term injury, but if they do, the solution would be somebody smaller and less known. I also very much doubt they would go with Bulaga at LT. There is a very slim chance Fluker or some other RT type would be taken, but only if they conclude that whatever messed up Bulaga before his injury will still mess him up.

My best guess is we don't trade down; We get the best 3-4 DE available at #26 (maybe the UCLA kid); Then an OLB in the second - even if Perry is healthy, a spare tire at the most important position in Capers defense is a good idea; Maybe Montee Ball in the 3rd; Maybe a TE, maybe even a WR in the 4th if somebody good is available - we did lose Jennings and Driver. 5th is where we get the extra, right? Maybe a O Lineman who could be cross-trained as a center, maybe a different RB if we don't take Ball higher, maybe finally a safety there. 6th and 7th, just whatever is left over.
