Free agency opened 15 days ago.  This year, the initial surge of cash was more limited than ever, more than a few guys settled for one-year deals, and plenty of other players are still waiting to get paid. For some, the issue is cap space.  For many, it can't be.  As of Tuesday, March 26,

Others with eight figures include the Packers with $18.3 million, the Bills with $16.8 million, the Dolphins with $15.7 million, the Cardinals with $14.0 million, the supposedly spending-to-the-cap Patriots with $13.4 million, the supposedly cap-strapped Jets with $13.0 million, the Colts with $11.7 million, and the Titans with $10.7 million.

We will probably see more and more teams with room under the cap in the future. There will only be a handful of teams that get into a bind. It is too easy to release high priced players to make room. They will take a hit on the signing bonus but will save the 3rd-4th years of a contract plus in season bonus money.

The reason there seems to be more cap space than we normally see, is because teams used the end of the old CBA, the uncapped season, and provisions on how to move cap money forward in the new CBA, to set themselves up for the future and correct much of the cap nightmares.

As we move forward the next few years, we will see the good teams able to keep their cap in good shape and those NOT so good teams end up in hell again.

there are many reasons.

1. spreads out the signing bonus. even if a team suspects that they may not keep a player long term it gives them more room in year 1 and 2. Perhaps a big contract will come off the books down the road so they don't mind the "dead weight penalty" they will get in year 3 and 4.

2. player diminishes in value faster than expected. Injury is one reason. Some players like RB have it one year and loss it "all" the next.

3. Poor agent. Shows his player how rich he will be over the course of the deal but doesn't realize he player is priced out of the market at the end. Note- releasing the player doesn't mean the team is not wiling to keep him. Just not at that price.

4. Draft or FA. The team picks a player who is better than the one they signed and they pay him less. This also applies to players who are already on the team and move up the depth chart.


I am sure there are other reasons but this is what I came up with for now.

I think the capping for the rookies coming in is also playing a fair role in allowing teams to better manage the cap.. the top end of the draft isn't cluttered any longer with cap busting deals for unproven talent.. allowing more of the cap space to be shifted to the veteran players. It also allows teams to better manage keeping and managing the money factor for developing players.

Trickle down effect if you will.
