To save salary cap space, the Packers are taking a calculated risk by offering center Evan Dietrich-Smith the lowest restricted free agent tender.

a little bit of a surprise. I thought they would go for the middle tender.

I figure they would go a little higher on their tender to hedge against coming away it no C once again.

As average as EDS has proven to be, he's better than a lot of back-ups at C/G that are earning the same kind of money. I'd give him a look, at least.

That said, he obviously wasn't worth the 2nd round tender, either. Like the article says, they're taking a calculated risk. Let's just hope that we won't regret it later on.

Shields for a 2nd... With a guy like Alex Smith being worth more than a 2nd, a guy like Percy Harvin going for a 1st + 7th + Mid-round next year... I wouldn't rule it out completely that someone would make an offer to him.

I know there's quite a big chance that he won't get an offer, especially since you can get a pretty decent CB on the FA market for whom you wouldn't have to give up a high draft pick, but they won't come as cheap as Shield. Or as good at just age 25.

Packers defensive back Sam Shields can be had for a second-round draft pick. The Packers have placed the second-round tender on Shields, a restricted free agent, a league source tells PFT. TThat means any team that wants Shields can sign him to an offer sheet, and if the Packers don’t match it, that team would get Shields and the Packers would get that team’s second-round draft pick.

The Packers made it more difficult for restricted free agent CB Sam Shields to find his pot of gold after slapping the second-round tender on him, according to multiple reports.

beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered

wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.

Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
