In spite of the fact that I 'own' the Packers, I have never been a part of Ted's annual performance review. So I thought I would list some support why he is the best GM in football.
* Packers are relevant. He can't suck that bad or we wouldn't have that extra SB trophy. We are among the favorites to win another one next year. We own the NFC North. That's pretty good.
* Packers are not in CAP hell. There are no major mistakes impacting our CAP. He makes tough decisions like Woodson release with an eye on the future.
*Packers are a young team. While we didn't qualify as the youngest team in 2012, we're still near the bottom. Football demands youth and Ted Thompson has done an excellent job of staying young.
*Fans complain because he is failing to make the one move that will win us the next Lombardi Trophy. 10 years ago, it would have taken 10 new players to win a trophy. Now it's just one. That's progress.
***Finally, and most importantly, he can't keep members of his staff. This is probably the most important measure of what professional football minds think about TT's performance. He is losing a key man of his staff every year as they move into GM positions of their own. Imitation is the most sincere form of flattery. Seattle, KC, Oakland are flattering TT.

I know, I know, he should sign more high priced vets. After all, that strategy has worked well for Chicago, right? Their OL is good. Great depth in their defense. Leadership evident throughout their team. Oh wait. They suck? Really? But they have all those high priced FA's?

Possibly adding Jake Long to that list of free agents.

This seems like kind of a knee jerk reaction to what was mentioned about Thompson in the LB thread.

Thompson is a great GM, but he has his flaws like all the rest. Thompson seems a shrewd talent evaluator for players entering the NFL out of college. He seems to have missed a bit with his FA signings of veteran players, of which he does very little. He made incredible signings early in his career with GB with Ryan Pickett and Charles Woodson. Since that time, the FA signings of any real significance to this team have been few and far between.

Say what you want, but we have players on this roster who are eating up cap room that could and should be spent on DL, LB and S in FA.

You make it sound like the only FAs available are the very highest paid. Not true. There are plenty of mid level players out there that would not break the bank, and would improve this Packers team. Will he sign any? We shall see. We've gone two full seasons without pass rush opposite Matthews. You can say Perry all you want, and I really liked the pick myself, but I thought he required more than just a draft pick to insure this was shored up. He should have added a vet. Would have taken some pressure off the kid, and given Capers more tools to work with.

I see Hawk and Finley eating huge portions of our cap, and we are simply not getting the return we should for those massive contracts. I respect Ted Thompson quite a lot, but he does have his work cut out for him. I hope he sees we need veterans added to this giant mix of youth that we have on our team. If a couple of those are high priced, what should it matter if we take care of the Finley and Hawk contracts?

Wouldn't you rather have Dashon Goldson and Osi Umenyiora on this team than those two? I would. Sign me up for some of that! Immediately.

He DOES sign free agents. It's just that he generally signs HIS OWN. Other than that, he picks up dudes like SAM SHIELDS, DUJUAN HARRIS, Eric Walden. Guys who come on AT A LOW COST and get it done.

Every undrafted free agent coming out of the draft knows two things: 1: They have a shot of not only making Green Bay's roster, but contributing. 2: Green Bay is a contender.

So yeah. I like Ted's way of doing things.

Here's another issue. Ted is an excellent scout and evaluator. We've got young guys on their first contracts who are playing well above what they are making. And when they get to the point where they're gonna demand a huge payday, guess what. There's gonna be an underpaid, overperforming youngster behind them.

The exception to this rule is Clay Matthews, who will get paid. I assume Aaron also will get paid, despite his detrimental self centeredness on the field.

Ted Thompson was quite shrewd in nabbing Pickett and Woodson when he did, March and April of 2006. Both were exceptional talents. At the time of the Pickett signing, he led the NFL in Tackles for DL. I believe Kampman was #3.

Hopefully Ted will do that again. The timing is perfect as we are looking to pile onto our collection of Lombardi Trophies with more, while we have Rodgers and Matthews in their primes. I would ditch the stuff that isn't working and replace it with players that will get us to the top again.

Goldson could be a key piece for us, and I think we should pull out all of the stops to make it happen. Then draft D heavy again. Fix the line. Fix the backers.

While Uncle Teddy did go after Woodson keep in mind Woodson didn't go after GB. He came out of default. If any other team had shown the slightest amount of interest (monetarily) that GB did, he would not have come.
Which is why some of the other talented FAs have not gone to GB.

And, our flame out jobs have done us no favors the past two seasons...

I'm going to go out on a limb and say this is the year Ted Thompson makes some major FA moves.

Mucky Tundra (38m) : Kanata, seek help! lol
beast (2h) : I was rooting for the Bears to win and hurt their draft pick status
Zero2Cool (2h) : Forgot there was even a game last night haha
TheKanataThrilla (3h) : That was terrible.
TheKanataThrilla (3h) : Watching that game in its entirety yesterday is proof positive that I am a football addict.
beast (3h) : And horrible time management multiple times... and not being able to score more than 3 points on a team with talent
beast (3h) : Realizing the Bears didn't fix it from the previous week and do the same thing, getting the game to overtime
beast (3h) : They probably are not tanking, but they've absolutely mismanagement some things, such as Vikings seeing the Packers blocked FG and realizing
Zero2Cool (4h) : Crazy of Bears to have that mindset that is
Zero2Cool (4h) : Hail Mary stop away from 5 - 2. Not sure how that flips to tanking. Crazy mindset if true
beast (5h) : I've quietly questioned if Bears are tanking on purpose... they suddenly got a lot worse with some simple concepts like 101 clock management
wpr (7h) : Watching bares fans melt down over how putrid their team is, so enjoyable. It's the gift that keeps on giving.
Mucky Tundra (14h) : The Seattle Seahawks defeat the Chicago Bears 6-3. Jason Myers had 6 RBIs for Seattle while Cairo Santos had 3 RBI for Chicago
beast (15h) : Not nessarily, he might of been injured either way. He's playing about 50% of the games the last 4 years
Zero2Cool (22h) : If they'd been more patient with him, he'd be back already. Putting him out there vs Bears caused him to tweak it and here we are.
packerfanoutwest (22h) : well this is his last season with the PAck, book it
beast (23h) : Sounds like no Alexander (again), I'm wondering if his time with the Packers is done
Zero2Cool (26-Dec) : Could ban beast and I still don't think anyone catches him.
Mucky Tundra (26-Dec) : Houston getting dog walked by Baltimore
packerfanoutwest (25-Dec) : Feliz Navidad!
Zero2Cool (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas!
beast (25-Dec) : Merry Christmas 🎄🎁
beast (24-Dec) : Sounds like no serious injuries from the Saints game and Jacobs and Watson should play in the Vikings game
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : both games Watson missed, Packers won
Martha Careful (24-Dec) : I hope all of you have a Merry Christmas!
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Oh I know about Jacobs, I just couldn't pass up an opportunity to mimic Zero lol
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : Jacobs was just sat down, Watson re-injured that knee that kept him out 1 game earlier
buckeyepackfan (24-Dec) : I needed .14 that's. .14 points for the whole 4th quarter to win and go to the SB. Lol
Mucky Tundra (24-Dec) : Jacobs gonna be OK???
Zero2Cool (24-Dec) : Watson gonna be OK???
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : Inactives tonight for the Pack: Alexander- knee Bullard - ankle Williams - quad Walker -ankle Monk Heath
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : No Jaire, but hopefully the front 7 destroys the line of scrimmage & forces Rattler into a few passes to McKinney.
packerfanoutwest (24-Dec) : minny could be #1 seed and the Lions #5 seed
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : We'd have same Division and Conference records. Strength of schedule we edge them
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I just checked. What tie breaker?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes its possible but unlikely. If we do get the 5th, we face the NFCS winner
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : Ahh, ok.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : yes due to tie breaker
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I mean, unlikely, yes, but mathematically, 5th is possible by what I'm reading.
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : If Vikings lose out, Packers win out, Packers get 5th, right?
bboystyle (23-Dec) : Minny isnt going to lose out so 5th seed is out of the equation. We are playing for the 6th or 7th seed which makes no difference
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, the ad revenue goes to the broadcast company but they gotta pay to air the game on their channel/network
beast (23-Dec) : If we win tonight the game is still relative in terms of 5th, 6th or 7th seed... win and it's 5th or 6th, lose and it's 6th or 7th
beast (23-Dec) : Mucky, I thought the ad revenue went to the broadcasting companies or the NFL, at least not directly
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I think the revenue share is moot, isn't it? That's the CBA an Salary Cap handling that.
bboystyle (23-Dec) : i mean game becomes irrelevant if we win tonight. Just a game where we are trying to play spoilers to Vikings chance at the #1 seed
Mucky Tundra (23-Dec) : beast, I would guess ad revenue from more eyes watching tv
Zero2Cool (23-Dec) : I would think it would hurt the home team because people would have to cancel last minute maybe? i dunno
beast (23-Dec) : I agree that it's BS for fans planning on going to the game. But how does it bring in more money? I'm guessing indirectly?
packerfanoutwest (23-Dec) : bs on flexing the game....they do it for the $$league$$, not the hometown fans
