It is being reported that the NFL is considering widening the field by 35 feet.
The idea being that this would make the game safer.

Any thoughts?

I don't see it making the game any safer. Sure it is a bigger field but teams tend to play the edges. it will be more of the same.

Next it will make the sidelines less safe as there will be less room or they will have to pull seats out of the stands. THAT will never happen.

Any changes made to the game to increase the safety of the game I will dislike, unless it means they go back to the leather helmet days.

To be fair, this wasn't reported on either ESPN's NFL section or CBS sports. Found it on SI though, which linked to the original source:

http://www.nationalfootballpost.com/NFP-Sunday-Blitz-1048.html

The NFL has looked to a lot of places to make its game safer. It even has looked to Canada. And it may continue to look north.

As recently as a year ago, the competition committee kicked around the idea of a bigger field, CFL style. And this wasn’t the first time the committee has broached the subject. Perhaps the committee will broach the subject again when it meets in Indianapolis in advance of the combine.

The Canadian field is 195 feet wide, compared to the 160 foot wide NFL field. The CFL field also is 30 yards longer, but the widening of the field is what really could impact safety regarding head injuries.

“I’m not so sure we shouldn’t think about widening the field,” former competition committee member Bill Polian said. “It’s a radical idea, but I think it’s worth thinking about. You would have more space and perhaps a safer game. I say that based on my CFL experience. There are less collisions of that type in the Canadian game.”

Click link for more. At this point, I'm not really seeing anything here that would indicate this is something being seriously considered, and I'm certainly glad. As I said before, this would radically change the game, and I would rather have the NFL destroyed quickly by a bunch of sissy ex-players lying about not knowing about the risks (as much as anybody did at the time) than slowly by twisting it into some sickening form with NBA-like scores.

I don't know about making the game safer but it sure would benefit the offensive aspect of the game.
The rule changes always seem to benefit the offensive aspect of the game.
I'm against it for that reason, I like defense.

Shall we prohibit defenders from moving completely?
Shall we rule defense out completely?
-These would dramatically cut down on injuries.

Are they admitting the Canadian game is better?

Are we going to merge with the Canadian League?

Are we going to go international?

Should we blend our game with Australian football and English soccer?

These questions and more will be answered and more...stay tuned.

dfosterf (25-Jun) : Weird question. Very esoteric. For stockholders. Also lengthy. Sorry. Offseason.
