Here is why.. the NFLPA has agreed to the IR exception and the later deadline.

This is good news for both Bishop and the team.. if he can make a speedy recovery.. he has a hope of playing again this season and possibly helping the team later in the year.

Good news.

What is hilarious is that just a week ago they rejected both rule changes. Glad the NFLPA is worried about this and not the lack of capable officials.

edit: Why the hell did I just bring negativity into this thread? ignore that. I am excited for the possibility of Bishop's return.

I seem to remember somewhere that the exception only applies to people on the original list of 53 before going on IR. And since Bishop went on IR before the cutdown to 53, he's still done for the year.

Don't remember where I read that, though, so I might be misremembering.

We shall see.. but good point.

As mentioned, Bishop is probably best left on the IR all season. Sounds like a nasty injury. I'm almost wondering if this designation wouldn't be better for someone such as House.

My only point, is this partial season IR policy at least gives players like this options.

But I agree.. it might not be used on Bishop.. but at least there is a chance.

Here is the answer Wade.. this had to be included IMO since they instituted the rule within the calendar year.

So yes.. they have to be on the final roster, and must be on the IR for at least 8 weeks.

House may be a better candidate for this.. that or hold it in their pocket for later in the season for an injury.

The injured reserve rule allows one player per team  to be activated from IR after a “major injury.” The player must miss at least six weeks of practice. He may be placed on the active list at least eight weeks after placement on injured reserve.

Unlike the PUP list, then, the window for returning to practice or returning to action doesn’t close. Once it’s open, it stays open.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft has said that, if such a provision had been in place four years ago, the team possibly would have used the designation for quarterback Tom Brady, who tore an ACL in Week One.

Here’s where it gets complicated. Because teams already have cut to 75, a special procedure applies for 2012. As to teams that already have placed players on IR, the player for whom the short-term IR procedure will be used must be placed back on the active roster by 9:00 p.m. ET, August 31. He’ll then count as one of the final 53.

Then, after 4:00 p.m. ET on Tuesday, September 4, each team can place one player on the modified IR list.

This means that teams hoping to use the new IR rule for a player already on injured reserve will have to displace another player for nearly four days, using a roster spot for the injured player and then creating a roster spot next Tuesday, when that player goes back to IR.

Because say they put Bishop will come back... but then they realize he's not going to be healthy enough to return, and another player (say Starks since he's injured right now) get put on the IR but is getting healthy... can they pick Starks after he's been on the IR for 8 weeks?

Or do they have to pick the player as soon as they get put on the IR?
