Capers probably has a soft spot for the Charlotte-native who wears 51, since he’s said before he reminds him a little of Sam Mills (who starred for Capers with the Panthers).

But mostly, the move stands as a bit of an indictment on Hawk, and it makes you wonder what Ted Thompson was thinking giving him a five-year, $33 million deal before the lockout.

Stirring up the controversy.

We all knew what Hawk was when he got that contract. Fact is, the dude is available week in and week out. (Not to jinx him of course.)

Still, Smith deserves to get on the field.

Simply.. Smith is better in space than Hawk.

Watch both of them move.. agility goes to Smith.. hands down. Instincts probably do as well.. and Smith is still green as hell.

IMO.. Hawk over thinks the game... has since after his rookie year. In coverage.. that will hurt you if you don't react quickly.

I am good with this.. probably would be good with Smith over Bishop as well in the dime.. moves better in space.

Smith has more hustle. He can get to the tackle faster. Hawk is good to have around though. He still has value here.

I feel an outburst coming on by Hawk's defense attorney Mr. Buckeye.

If AJ Hawk is not on the field for passing downs, then he needs to take a pay cut. There's a lot a coin in his pocket.

I'm hoping the kid we drafted, Manning, steps up and beats out Brad Jones, Lattimore, and the guy that slips my mind.

Smith's just a better player. He's so instinctive and he's always around the ball. His nose is in just about every play within reasonable range. The only reason it's controversial is because Hawk's a former No. 5 overall pick whereas Smith's a second-year sixth rounder.

Bishop was in the nickle package... Smith is replacing the injured Bishop... now Smith is in the nickle package. No big deal... they're just stirring the pot trying to find a way to bring up the contract (which was too much, and fans seemed to know it as soon as he signed it)

And I got to agree with Pack93z... Smith doesn't have the best speed but he has a lot of agility and can turn very quickly almost like a DB. And he's right, Hawk seems to be over thinking and reacting instead of attacking.
