It was approximately 2 a.m. when my cell phone began to blare as if it was a blow horn in its previous existence, assuming a call this early must be urgent I answered it, “Slick, is this SlickVision?” said the voice, “Yeah, that’s me, call me Kevin, how did you get my number?” I requested, “This is ORICHIE with AFO, I need your help, strydr26 gave me your number because he said you are a wiz at building websites, long story short my companies website was hacked and I need it back up but I need a reliable person to help me”
I had played Tribes2 an online First Person Shooter computer game with a team named All For One which I earned a reputation as a web designer throughout the gaming community. ORICHIE is one of the CEO’s of Worr Paintball. His previous web personnel allowed the site to be hacked with no assistance being offered in getting the site functional once again. WGP’s big attraction was their forums. With the site and forums completely ruined he needed everything resurrected, properly maintained and done immediately. ORICHIE and I logged onto ICQ (an instant messaging system) and began to exchange details on his new site. With in the hour the forums and site were up and running with users registering at a pace neither he nor I could ever have imagined.
It’s truly amazing how all this came about when you look into the details of it all. I live in Wisconsin, strydr26 lives in Washington and ORICHIE lives in California with the only connection being we all played an online computer game on the same team. Maintaining that website has been profitable for me in many ways, not just financially, but it has also given me experience in dealing with a high income company on a professional level that will only benefit me in the future. And its all due to online communication. If not for computer game connection, ORICHIE’s company would have been forced to pay a high priced company to develop a secure website which would have taken days, possibly weeks. Instead he was able to have his website up, secure and properly maintained before the higher ups in his company were even awake at a fraction of the cost.
