The Packers didn't sign a replacement via veteran free agency but did draft Maine safety Jerron McMillian in the fourth round of last week's draft. Are they prepared to put a rookie alongside third-year player Morgan Burnett? Or will Peprah get another chance?

Seifert is an annoying Queens homer, but I think he's got a point here. This position battle could be the biggest of camp.

Peprah has a chance. I view him as the incumbent. That entire year he spent opposite Collins, he was fine. It was only when he spent the year opposite Burnett that there were "miscommunication" problems. Well that was basically Burnett's rookie year. He was injured almost all the season before and never got an offseason in the program, because of the lockout.

So I think with an offseason in the program Burnett should be more solid. If not, maybe McMillian will replace HIM.

You guys are thinking too linear. (2 CB and 2 S) You won't see two specific Safeties out their all game long. Think about it this way Capers has a big box of tinker toys. He dumps them out and beings to put it all together. Sometimes he will have 2 DL. Other times 3 or 4. He will use 1-4 LB. He will have 2,3 or 4 CB. 1 or 2 S. His scheme changes from down to down and team to team. That is what makes Woody so valuable. He is going to move around and play a lot of different positions.

Personally, I don't think Charlie Peprah is a bad player. I just think he was made to look worse than he really is on many occasions last year, like most of our secondary, due to ZERO pass rush. However, dodd, I think I get a sense of what you are saying. Not the fastest guy out there, or the best tackler, maybe far from that on both points. I saw that too. Peprah had 2 INTs in 2010, one returned for a TD. He had 5 INTs last year and 1 FF, 74 TK 24 AST.

Last season, to me, made this entire secondary group kind of tough to evaluate, as they were really hung out to dry. Quick changes in possession forced them back onto the field quite a lot. Some of these guys needed a blow. Then, despite the fact most QBs had all day to throw, they still ranked #1 overall in the NFL in INTs with 31, crushing the mark with 8 more INTs than #2 ranked NE. Displayed some really poor tackling nonetheless, and gave up an assload of +20 yd pass plays. Yeeesh!

I think McMillian will compete for the starter spot, and could very well get it. If he doesn't, I'm OK with Charlie back there again. More emphasis on better tackling, and an added pass rush should make him, and everyone else back there, look a lot better.

nerdman, bringing up Burnett is a good point too, as he was essentially a rookie, alongside Peprah. They are all going to look like world beaters this season! Just think, how did we get all those picks with such little pass rush? Add a rush to that, and... wow. This could be big.

Big competition this training camp for the vacant S position.

Peprah
Jennings
Levine
McMillian
Richardson(?)

Peprah better get his ass in gear or one of these guys are going to grab his spot. Watching Richardson's highlight film, he was in the backfield a lot and had some great tackles against top competition in the SEC.

I'm just curious....do people think any substantial number of the safeties' individual or collective failures last year could have come because they were trying to cover for the weaknesses of our ILB in pass coverage?

For example, if Hawk and Bishop are unable to or out of position for covering TEs and others across the middle, might that not tempt the safeties into cheating up and thereby opening up more deep plays?

I'm with those who think that major defensive improvement depends first and foremost on an improved pass rush. But I'm wondering whether improvement by ILBs may be more important than who becomes Collins' replacement.

For the most part, I think it's just that simple: fix the pass rush, fix the defense (as all of us have stressed). Yeah, there will still be communication issues that need to be improved and such, but it's amazing how much easier it is to communicate when the defense is getting a pass rush. Rushing the QB will be much harder to improve than the communication issues.

Couldn't agree more Dodd. A good pass rush will make everybody on the defense look better. There were numerous times last year when opposing QB had 6,7 seconds and more. DBs can't cover that long. Even the commentators talked about this. This really hurt on 3rd downs when the Packers put opponents in long yardage and couln't get off the field. Hopefully that get remedied this season. Certainly there are other things to address but non even close to being as critical as a pass rush.

I think a bigger point is, that we need to get guys that can put pressure of the oppsing QB. (Hopefully we did with this draft).
I believe that would make the D-backs automatically better, as they don't have to cover as long.
I don't care WHO is covering. No one can cover a guy forever. WR's will get open sooner or later when there is no pass rush. We saw that all last season.
