Erik Walden was hoping for a second chance. On Monday, the Green Bay Packers granted him one. The outside linebacker was re-signed by the team. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

The fifth-year pro finished 2011 with 86 tackles and three sacks, though lost his starting job by the postseason. It was a turbulent season for Walden, one marred by an off-field arrest. But now, he’ll at least be welcomed back for a fresh start.

Walden appeared to be turning the corner in the middle of last season. He had 15 tackles and a sack in back-to-back games against Tampa Bay and Detroit, displaying improved pass-rush skills. And then, soon after that win on Thanksgiving, Walden was arrested following a dispute with his live-in girlfriend. His play on the field began to suffer and Walden also lost 15 pounds due to a sickness.

OLB is now no worries. That frees us up to take Zeitler or Konz.

I hadn't heard that he was ill and had lost 15 lbs. That explains more to me than just the arrest situation. Walden will be back, just watch.

We'll see how Zombo comes back too. He's still never had a pro offseason. As for Jones, he is what he is. A versatile guy who can play inside or outside, but isn't gonna light it up.

I personally would not be opposed to drafting an OLB, but I'd have to think think makes OLB less of a priority than the DL and C. You have young players to generate competition opposite Clay... and Brad Jones + Walden both are capable of filling the role you want an OLB to fill to complement a stud OLB - that is, one where they can hold the edge against the run, drop into passing lanes, and provide decent pass-rushing when asked.

I'm expecting more of an emphasis on C and the D-Line early on in the draft after this re-signing.

Frank Zombo, Brad Jones, Jamari Lattimore, Vic So'oto, Clay Matthews III and add in Erik Walden now? So much for needing to draft OLB!

Walden signing changes nothing, nothing at all. I think Walden or So'oto can be good for the Packers at OLB, but only if they pick up a DE who can give a tinkle of a threat of a pass rush. If they have the same zero production from the DL, it won't matter if they have two Matthews' on the edges.

The DL needs to EAT up blockers and if they can provide a push, you get double digit sacks by your OLB's. No push from the DL, then the OL will bounce block them and snuff out the OLB.

The Erik Walden signing only adds competition, it does not reduce the need for OLB or DE.

Wait, Erik Walden sets the edge well against the run?? That's news to me (or any of the other OLB outside of CM3).

Depending on how the draft goes, I would not be surprised if he doesn't make the final 53 (and that will be fine by me). We have to get 90 bodies into camp somehow!

beast (30-Jan) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (30-Jan) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (30-Jan) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
