Death Star Costs $15.6 Septillion, 1.4 Trillion Times the US Debt

If you had $15.6 septillion and 94 cents in your account, would you save the world from the economic crisis or build a Death Star, destroy the world, and move on to invade the galaxy?

A guy called Ryszard Gold -- who probably is an alien villain from the Outer Rim planets and got a 49-point score in our Geek Social Aptitude Test -- made the calculation of the most basic Death Star's price with current materials and space transport costs here on Earth. Here's a quick summary:

• First, assume that 1/10 of the 17.16 quadrillion cubic meters of the Death Star is something other than empty space and 6/10 of the total volume is pressurized space.
• That will require 1.71 quadrillion cubic meters of steel, about 134 quadrillion tonnes. That's $12.95 quintillion in current 2008 prices, and that's without counting strange alloys and elements.
• Shipping that to space will cost $95 million per tonne: So add $12.79 septillion in transport.
• Now you need to add air, which will require 8.23 quintillion cubic meters of Nitrogen, and 1.65 quintillion cubic meters of oxygen, for a total delivery cost of $2.81 septillions and $212.46 quintillion.

The total: $15,602,022,489,829,821,422,840,226.94.

Yes, that's a whooping 1.4 trillion times the current US Debt. Or a sightly more meaningful number: 124 trillion years of war in Iraq.

That will only get you the very basic model of Death Star, no options, no GPS, no radio, no leather heated seats, no mega-laser to obliterate planets, no turbolaser towers, no computer systems, no miscellaneous life support systems, no crew quarters, no turbo-elevators, no energy generators, no showers, no air conditioning, no Darth Vader's jacuzzi, no Emperor's home theater system, and no bloody canteen. And don't get me started on the cost of all the lunch trays and the constant supply of penne all'arrabbiata and peas needed for all the Death Star personell*. That will probably double the final bill, coupled with the construction costs, for a total of more than $31 septillions.

As for the answer to the first question, there's no doubt about it. But then again, I always liked the Emperor's robe. He goes naked everywhere and nobody notices.

If the emperor could afford two build TWO death stars, how big of a pimp daddy was he really, and where the hell did he get all that money?

The costs of building the death star would be a very small fraction of that with the technology and access to a galaxy of resources that the Empire would have. The "cost" of materials on earth is so astronomical since we have such finite resources. Increase the number of planets from which to mine by thousands if not millions, cost dramatically decreases. Not that I'd imagine the death star would be made out of steel. Interesting quick read though.

And if a society is at the level where they can contemplate building something like the Death Star, they've doubtless figured out how to mine the Asteroid Belt and similar "off-planet" sources of resources. And thus eliminated the single biggest cost of using planetary resources -- escaping the gravity well.

My guess is that alone would reduce the costs by 2-3 orders of magnitude and put the cost down into billions of times the US debt.

And of course if you add in the fact that a galactic empire could cover a few millions of planets to spread that debt among, and you're already down to a few hundreds of thousands of times the USA debt at most.

Now Dyson spheres on the other hand...they're something truly far out there in the sense of trillions and trillions of times as costly. [grin1]

Typical shabby journalism. Of course the notion that you could calculate such an estimate to the nearest penny, by itself, should have alerted everyone that it was a piece of shit estimate.

By the way, I'm still giving applause to the original poster. He's given me a great example to use if I get to teach the "economic numeracy" class I'm in the process of proposing.

[grin1]

And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Anyways, applause point for NSD. Izzard is hilarious, but that was one of the funniest pieces I've ever see him do. Didn't see that one before.

Zero2Cool (12h) : Bahah, I was like WTF why isn't anyone posting on PP.com ... oops no one has permissions
dfosterf (14h) : tell her I reckon
dfosterf (14h) : Micah Robinson cut. Probable PS player tomorrow. Has to call mom back and t
Zero2Cool (17h) : New site so much better. Might make switch and deal with it.
dfosterf (17h) : Mecole Hardman to our practice squad
dfosterf (17h) : Nick Nieman from Texans our 5th linebacker. Special teams signing
TheKanataThrilla (18h) : Looks like we signed Clayton Tune as QB3
wpr (18h) : TKT people lose their minds over QB3. Point is almost none of them are ready that's why they are on the PS and other teams don't take them.
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : Unfortunately he doesn't seem ready to be an emergency QB.
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : As a Canadian and a follower of Canadian University football. I am rooting for him
dfosterf (19h) : I bet a lot of us will follow the Taylor Elgersma journey with interest. Personally, got a Kurt Warner vibe goin' on. I like him
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : Not sure if either will be claimed though.
TheKanataThrilla (19h) : Tune or Hooker would make sense
dfosterf (19h) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (20h) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (20h) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (22h) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (22h) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (22h) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (22h) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (22h) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (22h) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (23h) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : what is Schefter saying?
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He was getting Dorito infusion therapy
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He's outta shape. Why, just the other day I saw him splayed out on the trainers table
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Parsons has followed Rasheed Walker on Twitter. Quite the choice
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Kuhn is a former player who works for the team, if somethings going down, he would be close to it
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : @kuhnj30 Micah Freaking Parsons
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : A LOT of buzz on the Bird App regarding Parsons; even Schefter is saying it's serious
dfosterf (26-Aug) : *Orzech*
dfosterf (26-Aug) : Orzich long snapper 3 yr extension
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : Packers signed someone for three year deal
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : lol i know it's insane ... sign up for the waiver wire then you'll know
wpr (26-Aug) : YES!!!!!!
Mucky Tundra (26-Aug) : WE WANT THE LIST! WE WANT THE LIST!
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : @JJLahey · 2m Holy crap, Packers, where the heck is the list?
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : haha folks on Tweeter every year this time ... 'where is list Packers!!" hahaha
wpr (26-Aug) : He played pretty good.
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : NAZIR STACKHOUSE HAS MADE THE 53
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : NOOOOO KALEN IS GONE
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : Kalen King and Kamal Hadden making it. me thinks
schroeder84 (26-Aug) : @dfosterf I suspect Elgersma WILL be hard to hide. Raw, but talented
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : pp.com is broken, halt testing, gotta go do work things for a bit
hardrocker950 (26-Aug) : Mecole Hardman was released, to the surprise of few
Zero2Cool (26-Aug) : PP.com updated. Reset Password works, and now User Profile pages are a thing
Zero2Cool (25-Aug) : Soft hope plan is having fantasy football weekly on-site that i build. cannot do that with this setup.
Zero2Cool (25-Aug) : It's older technology, resource hog, cannot be upgraded/changed. That's to start.
