Gregg Easterbrook devoted some space in this week's Tuesday Morning Quarterback  to describing how Pittsburgh beat New England. I couldn't say it any better than he does. I've been arguing for years that the main reason why Tom Brady seems so great on the field is that defensive coordinators are afraid of giving up the occasional big play to him and having to answer for it in the postgame press conferences, so they play their defensive backs far off the receivers in the vain hope of reducing the damage instead of preventing it. This results in Brady having so much time in the pocket that he literally stands on his heels. He's the only quarterback in the league I can think of who doesn't even bend his knees or stand on the balls of his feet while in the pocket. Teams that pressure Tom Brady tend to win, while teams who show cowardice when facing him tend to lose.

As someone said recently (it might have been Gregg Easterbrook himself), concerns over job security drive more decisions on the field than concerns over winning the game. I find that so ironic, considering the fact that winning the game is the best method to ensure job security. Unfortunately, humans are inherently risk averse creatures, and avoiding something bad is often a greater incentive than attaining something good.

Kudos to the Steelers for manning up this week, taking the risk of looking foolish, and forcing Brady to make decisions he doesn't like to make.

When New England had possession, Pittsburgh used a choked-up tight defense. Many defensive coordinators have responded to Brady's pinpoint throws by backing their secondaries off; but New England likes to operate against a backed-off zone. Sunday, Pittsburgh often had eight and sometimes nine defenders up on the line of scrimmage -- and almost always jammed the New England wide receivers. That knocked off the timing upon which Brady relies.

Pittsburgh leading 10-0, New England faced third-and-15. In this long-yardage situation, Brady would expect a backed-off secondary. Instead nine defenders were on the line. All Patriots wideouts were jammed. Pre-snap, it looked as if Pittsburgh would big blitz. Instead only four rushers came, and both pairs ran twists. The result was linebacker LaMarr Woodley unblocked for a sack. In Dick LeBeau choreography, the desired outcome is one rusher coming through unblocked. New England would end up with five sacks on Roethlisberger, versus Pittsburgh with three on Brady. But the herky-jerky Pittsburgh attack doesn't seem to mind sacks, which the Paul Bunyan-like Roethlisberger barely seems to notice. The New England attack relies on precision, and pretty-boy Brady gets flustered when he's hit.

I was too busy laughing at Tom Brady's uselessness to notice how tightly they played. Apparently that's the way to go from now on.

I agree Finny, and in fact, until those pussies win a playoff game again; they have no relevancy.

(probably the first time, even in jest as here, that he's ever been accused of such). [grin1]

Mucky Tundra (9h) : Now that's a thought, maybe they're looking at the college ranks? Maybe not head coaches but DC/assistant DCs with league experience?
beast (10h) : College Coaches wouldn't want that publicly, as it would hurt recruiting and they might not get the job.
beast (10h) : I thought they were supposed to publicly announce them, at least the NFL ones. Hafley was from college, so I believe different rules.
Mucky Tundra (10h) : Who knows who they're interviewing? I mean, nobody knew about Hafley and then out of nowhere he was hired
beast (13h) : I wonder what's taking so long with hiring a DL coach, 2 of the 3 known to interview have already been hired elsewhere.
