I had never seen Tim Tebow play, so I thought the fuss about his poor mechanics might be exaggerated. Then, during the last Broncos game, they played highlights from last season, and I must say, I was shocked. The man throws like a windmill. His windup is gigantic. It's not just huge -- it's slow. Most baseball pitchers have a more efficient windup than Tebow. Even with his much-vaunted mobility, he is a sack waiting to happen back there. Most good pass rushers could probably be across the line of scrimmage long before he has completed his windup. I can't understand why his awful mechanics weren't coached out of him long before he hit the NFL level. Right now he belongs as the third stringer. Hell, Graham Harrell's mechanics look sleek and graceful compared to Tebow's, and he's on the practice squad.
By the way, does any other team in the league have two first-round draft picks as backups at the same position? I can't think of one. Brady's and Tebow's stories are oddly similar: both were taken in the first round as the second pick of their team, and neither one has managed to start for any significant period of time. There's a certain monster on the Packers' roster whose career started out in similar fashion but has taken a radically different trajectory since then.
