Chastin West confident he’ll stick in NFL

The Green Bay Packers know wide receivers. Chastin West has their seal of approval.

On Monday, wide receivers coach Edgar Bennett said West was a legitimate player worthy of being on a 53-man roster in the National Football League.

"Yes, he is," Bennett said. "You have to be able to contribute as a receiver and on special teams, and he is certainly a guy who can do that. He's a good football player."

The question now is, will West be forced to look to another team for employment come Saturday afternoon when all clubs must reduce to 53?

"To be determined," said Bennett. "We've got one more preseason game and then a decision will be made."

West, 6-0 1/2 and 215 pounds, is hopeful that the punt-return ability he demonstrated Friday night in Indianapolis will put him over the top. He's also confident.

"I'll be in the league this season," he said.

History isn't on West's side. The Packers haven't carried six wide receivers on their opening-day roster since 2001, and rookie Randall Cobb seems rock solid as No. 5 behind four established veterans.

If the Packers do keep a sixth, it figures to be West or Tori Gurley.

I hope Ted Thompson can get some value for the good receivers we'll have to leave go.
