That's really unfortunate. If he somehow makes it back in 6-7 weeks it's not a huge deal, but I'd be surprised if he would be very effective for quite some time even after becoming "healthy." I wouldn't be shocked to see him placed on IR or even cut.

Considering that he played an entire game with this injury, maybe the break is not that bad. Maybe it's just a little crack or something. As long as he can come back by week five or six of the regular season, or somewhere around there, I expect they will give him a chance to heal. There are usually at least a few injured players on the 53 man roster in any given week.

Am I wrong, I thought if a player is on IR to start the year they can't play until after the sixth week? Do they have to count him on the 53 if he's on IR? That would be about ideal timing for him to come back. If they don't have to count him they can keep someone in his place. If this is the worst that happens this year I'll be very happy.

IR = Season

PUP = first 6 weeks.. however you have to been on the pup before camp.. once camp starts and you have practiced at all.. you are no longer eligible for the PUP list. Additionally I believe it the 9th week that the player either must hit active roster, IR or cut.. I believe it is a 3 week period that they can practice before making a decision..

I wonder if Ted Thompson will look to pick someone up. Guess it depends on whether they put Zombo on IR. That really stinks. I think he was playing some good football. I hope this isnt a sign of things to come like last year. Im keeping pawsitive and hope Zombo is back at least by midseason.

"He played Friday’s preseason game against the Cardinals after suffering the injury in warm ups after colliding with fullback John Kuhn."

Alright, no more contact for John Kuhn and any of our defenders.

2. Physically Unable to Perform (PUP)
A player who fails his club’s pre-season physical at the start of training camp may be placed by his club on the Physically Unable to Perform list. A player on PUP is eligible to receive his salary, but he is ineligible to participate in practices or games. However, a player on PUP is permitted to practice with his club and may be restored his club’s Active/Inactive list during a three-week period beginning the day after the sixth regular-season game and ending after the ninth regular-season game.

I think this is from 2008 so it may have been tweaked since. That said, you guys had it right: you have to be on it before training camp and you can be taken off it following the 6th week to start practicing. Wikipedia also says that once you have started practicing again the team has another 3 weeks to be activated so conceivably a player could start practicing 3 weeks after coming off PUP and then wait another 3 weeks before actually being activated.

Well everyone but the fringe player who would be cut.

He played in the game even after getting hurt... that makes me think it's not the worst case injury. And from what some have been saying it's a 5 to 8 week normal recovery time from a normal injury of this type (no idea if that's correct or not.. but assuming it is)... two weeks of preseason makes that 3 to 6 weeks.

To me that doesn't sound horrible for a guy that might of been starting... to keep him around on the active roster as one of the inactice guys to see if he heals fast enough, I'm guessing other teams aren't going to be jumping on the OLBers after Jones so they might make it to the practice squad and if we need one grab one and send someone to the IR.

They have two weeks before the final cuts to see how fast he's healing. If he's healing fast maybe keep him for the season, if he's not healing fast enough then they could put him on the IR right before the final cuts.
