Packers inform Chillar he has been released

By Tom Silverstein of the Journal Sentinel

Updated: July 29, 2011 9:03 a.m. |(47) Comments

The Green Bay Packers released linebacker Brandon Chillar Friday morning, raising questions about whether the league is being unfair to players who were injured while training during the lockout.

Chillar, who severely pulled a hamstring during personal workouts, was told that he had been let go. There was no way he was going to pass his physical, but the Packers could have put him on the physically unable to perform list if they thought he could come back from the injury.

Given Chillar is coming off shoulder surgery, it's possible the combination of injuries made it likely he wouldn't play this year and the Packers decided to move forward without him. I'll know more about the process in which this occurred later.

Chillar signed a four-year, $19 million contract that included $7 million over the first year back in December of 2009. He was due to make $2 milion in base salary, $300,000 in a roster bonus and $300,000 in a workout bonus this year.

As a result of his release, the Packers will gain $1.8 million in salary cap space. That's his $2.6 million earnings in 2011 minus $800,000 of pro-rated signing bonus money left in 2012 and '13.

Through the release of linebacker Nick Barnett, end Justin Harrell, linebacker Brady Poppinga and Chillar, general manager Ted Thompson has sliced of $10.4 million off the Packers' salary cap. He started out right at the $120 million limit.

I've been told the June 1 rules still apply under this collective bargaining agreement, so that means all of the pro-rated signing bonus money in future years gets pushed to next year instead of this year. So, the Packers will gain all $2.6 million of Chillar's earning this year and will take a charge of $800,000 next year.

Through the release of linebacker Nick Barnett, end Justin Harrell, linebacker Brady Poppinga and Chillar, general manager Ted Thompson has sliced off $12.7 million of the Packers' salary cap. Those same cuts will cost him $2.48 million next year because of the pro-rated shares left over in each player's contract.

The Packers were right at the $120 million salary cap mark at the start of free agency.

Kicker Mason Crosby's deal will account for more cap money spent and so will each of the draft choices the Packers sign.

Anybody else concerned about the MLB's now? I am. Need some reassurance.

Read that section again. I think verbiage from two different drafts of the article got left in the final product. There is contradictory information between the paragraphs.

I have been bitching about it for years. As journalism has become more bloggified -- and in the past couple years, Twitterfied -- quality has deteriorated steadily. It's almost impossible to find articles these days that are free of basic punctuation, spelling, or grammatical errors, because editing has gone the way of the stegosaurus. In the mad quest for the scoop, no fact checking is conducted and blatant falsehoods are printed -- often without so much as a perfunctory retraction later.

I agree that the state of reporting on the post-lockout period has been especially atrocious. Most reporters have finally gotten accustomed to Twitter, which has made them lazy and sloppy.

The other interesting aspect for myself.. if you tear past the goofy posts and the garbled noise, if gives you a window into a persons mindset and thought process. For that aspect, human behavior study, it is like mainlining case study after case study. The insecurities of some pours out, the confidence of some pops, and the motivation is blatant for many.

We truly are a nation built on greed and the craving of attention.

I'm probably the only one who didn't like this move. I thought Chillar was a quality backup.

As I read the article I could see how poorly it was worded. They should be embarrassed by their lack of quality.

On topic- I suspected Chillar would be gone after he was re injured. They have cut loose players with a lot of experience. Here's to hoping these youngsters can step up and fill their shoes.

beast (8-Aug) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (8-Aug) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (8-Aug) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (8-Aug) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (8-Aug) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (8-Aug) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.
Zero2Cool (8-Aug) : Packers star Howton, first NFLPA prez, dies at 95 😔
dfosterf (8-Aug) : Apparently it is too complicated for several to follow your simple instructions, but I digress
