Packers | Donald Driver has to prove himself
Thu, 28 Jul 2011 10:40:46 -0700
Green Bay Packers WR Donald Driver (knee/ankle) spent two months in a walking boot this offseason after suffering an injury in the Super Bowl.
Driver, 36, started to slow down last year for the first time, and his playing time also started to dwindle. He played more snaps (803), including the playoffs, than backup WRs Jordy Nelson (701) and James Jones (649), but both of them had more receiving yards than Driver did. Driver's yards after the catch also dropped to 3.06 last season, which was the lowest amongst the Packers receivers. In the last three seasons, he has dropped 25 passes compared to 14 in the three years before that.
When training camp begins, Driver, who is still happy to do the dirty work and go over the middle, is going to have to prove himself once again. Head coach Mike McCarthy said earlier this year that he believes Driver has a lot left in the tank, but offensive coordinator Joe Philbin said Driver, like everyone else, is going to have prove how ready he is for 2011. "We haven't slotted 50 balls to go his way, or 75, or 25. We'll see," Philbin said.
