On The Future Of Jermichael Finley

Should Green Bay Packers TE Jermichael Finley be paid like 49ers TE Vernon Davis based on his potential? From ESPN NFC North Blog:

Kevin Seifert: Once again, I'm surprised at how many people are worried about this issue. Finley's contract does expire after the 2011 season, and Finley's wife tweeted this week that family members are already asking where Finley will play in 2012...

To me, Finley will answer this question himself by the type of 2011 season he produces. If he becomes the type of 16-game weapon many people believe he can be, it's going to be hard for the Packers to part ways with him.

I've written similar thoughts on the subject in the past. Finley only has about 1000 yards receiving for his career, so to pay him a mega contract just because he's really talented is crazy. He has to produce on the field. If he plays 16 games and statistically becomes one of the best, the Packers will make sure he stays. If he gets hurt and misses most of the season, again, then they'll have a big decision to make.

I'd rather they wait and pay top dollar when they have to instead of overpaying now for someone who could be injury prone. The good news is the Packers have the entire 2011 season to figure out what to do, and I don't expect they'll rush to a decision. Finley might be a good candidate to re-sign to a big extension during the season, such as the Packers did last year with LB Desmond Bishop, once they know he can be productive and healthy.

They have to wait and see what he does this year before dolling out a big contract.

Give him a deal with incentives based upon catches, games activated and keeping his pie hole shut.

If he stays healthy and plays well, maybe they can start talking contract after about 12 games or so.

I don't see getting Finley on the cheap. His ego will demand top dollar for tight ends; and I say wait out the season, and then franchise tag his ass next year. I want to see him walk the walk, cause I've heard the talk. We don't need another Sterling Sharpe. Our offense runs best with multiple targets, not one guy wanting to be a star. If Finley can play within the system and rack up 65 catches, he'll be worth it.

I think the new CBA has new rules on franchise tag... so I'd want to know how much that would cost the Packers before putting that on him. But I don't think he's going to be able to walk away with the Packers getting nothing for him.

I know the Packers want to keep his talent around, but the questions are his healthy and his ego. I got a problem with one of his interviews where he says GB wouldn't be happy with him at his current weight but he's wants of playing in a two point stances comes before GB wants... but if he's able to walk the walk that his mouth has started then he might see that money he wants.

Like said above an incentives based contract might be the best way to go.

If we judge him by his recent comments, his probably going to ask to be paid as the most expensive TE in the NFL.

To tell you the truth I wouldn't mind considering he can play as a WR.

If Finley can produce like a top WR then it would be a great deal to get him at the highest paid TEs salary.

Does the franchise tag work the same way for TE/WR as OLB/DE? As far as how many snaps you play as one or the other?

Let it ride and see how he produces...we haven't seen one snap after his injury. Who knows he might not be the same player he was before.
