Should The Packers Bring Daryn Colledge Back As The Starting Left Guard?

While many of the Green Bay Packers lineman are gathered in Tennessee for player workouts, one starter who didn't make the trip is LG Daryn Colledge. With five years of NFL experience, he's a possible unrestricted free agent. However the Packers did tender him a contract as if he were a restricted free agent. He was recently interviewed by Jason Wilde:

"So right now the things I’m working on are staying in the best shape I can, continue to work on my drills, so if I’m back with Green Bay, I have the possibility to be the best left guard I can be for them. And if they decide to let me go and I’m picked up by another team, that I’m in the best shape I can be to learn a new system and take that opportunity for what it is."

I've been far from his biggest fan in the past, but he was solid in 2010. It was also the first season, at least as far as I can recall, that he was left exclusively at left guard. It's a real possibility that he's allowed to leave in free agency because the Packers might be tight up against the next salary cap. They may have alternatives in T.J. Lang and first round pick Derek Sherrod. I'd rather see Colledge return in 2011, but it might be impossible to keep all the starters from the championship team.

I don't know about bringing him back as starting left guard. Depending on the value I have no problems with him competing for starting left guard. Which he seems to have to do every year and continues to win the job. Don't know if we have enough talent on the line to upgrade there or not. Especially with a shortened off-season I lean more towards keeping him there.

I am not opposed to him competing for a spot on the roster. I do hope we have someone to beat him out though.
I want to go out like my Grandpa did. Peacefully in his sleep.

He's a below average starter in my opinion. Solid, not spectacular. Makes some bone headed mistakes. He hasn't gotten much better since he's been here, so I don't see why we would expect him to get better the future. My theory with o-line is that the best strategy (especially with a franchise QB) is to get the 5 best o-linemen on the field.

I might be in the minority here, but I'd like to see Sherrod earn the LG spot this season. I've read scouting reports that he could play guard, even if he's a natural tackle. My line-up for next season would be (from left to right): Clifton, Sherrod, Wells, Sitton, Bulaga.

My reasoning is simple:
1. We have one of the best QBs in the game, who has a history of concussions. Keeping him healthy is the key to repeating.
2. We are in a division with dominant defensive lines (Suh/Fairley, Peppers, Allen/K.Williams). We need to play our best 5 blockers.
3. We are primed to win now. (see point 1).
4. Sherrod will most likely be our LT of the future, getting him reps at LG will help his progress, more than hurt it in my opinion.

This is entirely based on Sherrod being a better LG than Colledge, Lang, Newhouse, McDonald, and Shlauderhaff. If he's not, than by all means play who is the best LG.

Per ESPN, the NFL had more than 20% more concussions reported in 2010 than 2009 and more than 30% more than 2008. Aaron's using a specially designed helmet to help prevent more concussions. However, the key to the Packers obtaining more Championships, yes, does rely on the health the of Aaron Rodgers. No questioning that.

Not a good thought for cheeseheads, or Mr Rodgers.

beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
