All that being said, I will tell you that the sound of an airplane door swooshing open just prior to jumping is one of the sweetest sounds I can imagine. But I am smart enough to ensure there is a canopy above my head.

And if DakotaT was born a dumbfuck, what does that make me?

You know how anti-gun people always say if a bullet put a hole in a plane, it would crash and everyone would die? Well, isn't an airplane door opening a much larger hole than a bullet hole?

As for jumping out of a perfectly good plane, that's pretty dumb. I'll stay on the plane and wave as you jump out.

Here on didn't crash.. but had to make an emergency landing because of a hole. Just last month.

Of course it more than likely won't immediately bring down the airliner.. but it certainly isn't going to increase the risk of landing the plane safely.

And one has to wonder what mysteriously brought down the flight from Brazil. Air France 447.

But I am sure that if one believes that the government hides things.. I am sure that they could probably hide the fact of why planes crash. lol. 😉

Given that commercial planes are required by FAA regulations to be able to glide something like 90 minutes (or is it 3 hours?) without any engine power whatsoever, I find it difficult to believe that airliners are not robust enough to withstand the hole in the fuselage from a small-caliber bullet. Especially since I saw helicopters in Iraq that were shot to hell and still managed to stay airborne.

I did a quick search. Found several articles that discuss this.

I found this one to be the most straightforward reply.

Dear Capt Lim,

Once, me and my family flew from New York to Buenos Aires in Argentina. It was my first time in a Boeing 777. The flight was smooth. Here is my question. If a plane runs out of fuel, how long does it have to make it to another airport?

I am 11 years old and I know a lot about airplanes (yes, I do have permission to email you)

Thanks a lot for trying to answer my question!

Chris.

Hi Chris,

If you have read one of my FAQ on Fuel Leak, you would have got part of the answer. If the airplane runs out of fuel, it is also similar to having all the engines failed in flight. This answer can be found in my FAQ too. Okay, just for your sake (being a 11 years old and very interested about airplanes), I will repeat. How long will a plane stay in the air when it runs out of fuel depends on the height at the time when the fuel runs out. The higher the airplane, the further it will glide and hence it would stay a little longer.

For example, if the airplane was at 35,000 feet or about 7 miles high, it would glide at about 5 miles a minute at a descent rate of about 4000 to 5000 feet a minute. At this gliding speed and descent rate, it would travel between 35 to 45 miles depending on whether there was a tail or head wind. So you have about 7 minutes to make it to another airport!

The Air Transat Flight 236  is mentioned a few times. It actually glided 65 miles from an altitude of 33,000 feet for 19 minutes. It did a bunch 360 turns to lower its altitude and it came in faster than what they normally want to land. So I think it could have glided a little further before crashing but it would not have made it beyond 30 minutes.

Sadly, the book I got that out of is back in the States. Maybe I will have to necro this thread when I get home.
