I believe arm strength is over rated. For every strong armed loser; Leaf, George, Russell, Smith, etc. there's an under powered winner; Starr, Montana, Staub, Brady, etc. Some even questioned Rodgers arm strength when he came out. There are other things that are as or more important, like poise, decision making, leadership, fortitude, etc. Also, these are young men and they will get stronger the next few years, some more than others, especially with professional strength and conditiong training.

I think arm strength is really important. Of course there have been strong-armed QBs who were no good, but a big-time arm is almost necessary to be a top-tier QB. The ability to throw the deep out (a long throw to the sideline), in particular, forces defenses to spread out.

Of the four QBs you mentioned who lacked top-flight arm strength, only one of them (Tom Brady) is a current player, and it's news to me that he does not have a strong arm. Maybe that was his reputation coming into the league or something, but if that's the case, things obviously changed. I remember Aaron Rodgers' arm strength being questioned (by some, not all) when he came into the league, but it was apparent to me from his first preseason that his arm was plenty good enough, and it only got better after that.

Flynn's arm strength is so-so, and at this stage of his career it is not likely to get better. That's why I don't think he's going to be much better than average as an NFL QB.

Greg, I don't disagree with anything you say. I just think some people overate arm strength, like it is neccesary to have an arm like Favre or Randall Cunningham. Certainly, all other things being equal, it is an advantage. Also, I understand there is a certain amount of strength neccesary to at least make all the throws in order to keep defenses honest. Again, I''m just saying it's not the only thing or even the most important thing to being a great QB.

If you have arm strength and know it, it's an incredible asset to a QB. There are not too many QB's who are like Johnny Unitas or Joe Montana that can feather a ball in to places consistently with ease. It takes great anticipation that MOST QB's should have, however, do not. Kyle Orton comes to mind. He's decent at 30 and shorter in my opinion but after that, it's a crap shoot between the WR being talented enough to come down with it or not.
