BROWN COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) -- A Brown County Sheriff's Deputy was honored for risking his own life to save three people.

Deputy Jason Katers pulled three people from a smoke filled home. He noticed the fire while on patrol last month in Howard. Katers went into the home three separate times to get everybody out safely.

"Bottom line is I was just out there doing my job," Katers said. "I'm confident that any one of my coworkers in the sheriff's office would have conducted themselves and performed in the same manner that I did, given similar circumstances. So thank you very much for the recognition."

One of the people Katers saved was Laurie Schoenebeck. She was visiting her father-in-law and his girlfriend, who live at the home on Maywood Avenue. Schoenebeck says thank you just doesn't seem like enough.

"If you hadn't come when you did come, I can see that things were happening very rapidly and I'm just so thankful that you came when you did, because we were all sleeping and we did not hear the smoke detector," Schoenebeck said. "The first noises I heard were you pounding on the door, so thank you for that."

Deputy Katers saved Schoenebeck's life on National Quilting Day, so she made him a quilt to say thanks.

She also gave the deputy a thank you note from her nieces and nephews.
