This past weekend, the girls and I went to see Mount Rushmore. It got me thinking, what other awesome places are there in this country? I've had a short list of things that I really want to see. I knocked one out this past weekend, a few others are Grand Canyon, Statue of Liberty and a NASCAR race.

What places have you been to and/or want to see?

i am one of those lucky people who have been in almost every state in the good ole u.s.a. we took a 2 week camping vacation every year from the time i was born til i graduated high school. i've seen alot but i know there is so much more to see in our country.

funny you're asking this because i'm currently trying to plan our family vacation & am clueless right now where to go. we'd like to either drive my expedition or motorhome to wherever we go. we're thinking (don't laugh) the dakota's, minnesota, michigan, iowa, or indiana. since we have people from those areas on here - HELP!!! any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. oh & we have to bring our lil dog peanut with us too so wherever has to allow pets. HELP HELP HELP!!!

Hawaii. We went to Maui for a week and took an excursion over to Oahu. The USS AZ was amazing. that is where we began our day. I still tear up. You can smell the oil as it leaks out of the ship 60 years later. We ended our day on the USS Missouri standing on the Victory Deck looking at the replica Surrender Treaty.

Been in the Smoky's of TN/NC. Beautiful.
FL lots of times.

Did Ellis Island along with Miss Liberty. (Stay on the Jersey side it is so much cheaper.) We were on Ellis 100 years to the day after my grandmother, her brother and my great grandmother came to this Land. Dad and my uncle were there. They were crying. It was worth the price.

The northwest is a must. I have not made it there but everyone who I talked to has loved it.

like PG, I have been in most every state.

Taking a cruise ship is neat. been on a couple of them. You eat lots. You get off in a new place every day and wander around for a while get back on the ship and go someplace else.

New England is beautiful in the fall but living the the Rockies gives you a similar show.

take the girls to DC. show them where things really get fouled up and yet this is still the greatest country.

I loved what I saw in Europe but I am assuming you are looking to stay stateside for now.

If you are an "ELVIS" fan, you need to see "Graceland".
I took my wife there in 1991, and she LOVED it.

Since you live in Illinois, you could travel through that god forsaken place called Iowa in route to the Black Hills - you're first two days will not be any fun. Spend a couple days in the Hills, then shoot across Wyoming and go to Yellowstone, contact Montana Bob for the Montana stuff, but you could check out the Battle of the Little Big Horn. Get on I94 and spend a day in a little old west town called Medora in the Theodore Roosevelt National Park, they have a great Musical in the evenings and very beautiful scenery.

Then drive up to the International Peace gardens and check out the Turtle Mountains, I spent a lot of my childhhood up there at my Grandmas. Then drive over to Walker Minnesota and spend some time around Leach Lake, check out Paul Bunyan and Babe, next stop the Wisconsin Dells. By then, you're almost back home and broke - at $4.00 a gallon, I wouldn't want to drive a motor home around.

That sounds like an awesome trip Dakota, I always wanted to drive to the Black Hills, but hell I seem like I never make it to the places I want to go. I live 4 hrs from Niagara Falls and I haven't even made it there yet. I live in a great location for driving to historical places being in Pa. I am only 6 and half hrs from New York City and live 4 hrs from Washington DC. I really need to get over to Gettysburg and check out the reenactments. Other than that I want to head to Hawaii for Pearl Harbor. Another little vacation spot that isn't that far is heading up to Door County in the spring for the Cherry trees blooming.
Just Imagine this for the next 6-9 years. What a ride it will be 🙂 (PS, Zero should charge for this)

If you're a sexy available woman over 18, the best vacation spot for you is in my pants and I'm open all day, all night and I'm always in season!

I drove through Pennsylvania and northern Virginia in winter and thought it was very beautiful, I can only imagine what it would be like in the fall. Northern Minnesota is very pretty in the fall.

When I was 18, my parents and I drove through Wyoming, Colorado, Utah, Nevada and S. Cal to witness my brother marry mistake number one. Very beautiful scenery in the Western U.S. The song America the Beatirul was no accident.

Julie,
Did you get my PM about Iowa? Sorry I couldn't be more help with personal experience, since, believe it or not, I've never taken a vacation in Iowa even though I've been here now since 1986.

Two places I'd like to go back to someday, both of which I think would be great if you have kids:

1. Southern Ohio. Lexington/Louisville, Ky./Cincinnati (baseball games), Dayton (the super cool Air Museum -- I liked it better than the Air & Space Museum in DC, though that might have been because it was the only place I've ever seen up close the plane my dad worked on (B-25 Mitchell). Horse country, where horses live in more luxury than most of us. Negative: it was also the first time I ever experienced the southern phenomenon of "dry counties."

2. The very southern part of Illinois and down through Tennessee River country and the very northern part of Alabama/Mississippi. A couple years ago (when I was on leave, and could travel more leisurely), I drove to Montgomery, Alabama. Most of Illinois bores the heck out of me (it rivals Iowa), but that far southern bit really looked intriguing, and there's some major league beauty between Paducah, Kentucky and the northern counties of Mississippi and Alabama. Negative: you will also find yourself driving through places that show just how well off the cities/towns up north here are. Not as depressing as South Texas, but clearly not as affluent as the upper Midwest either.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

If you end up in WI and are around the Oshkosh area you HAVE to take the boys to the Air Museum. Along with all the regular museum stuff they have a F16 flight simulator. When my son was about 14 I took him there and there was almost no one in the place. (November) He got to ride the sim 4 times in a little over an hour. Best $20 I spent. (It use to be $5 a ride) My son told me that it was really a F18 because F16s do not take off from an aircraft carrier. But he got to shoot at bad guys and do real barrel rolls. (I told him to try 3 in a roll. He come out of the sim a little woozy)
On the other side of US 41 is an outlet mall so that helps even things out.
