http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2011/04/11/stadium-bill-would-keep-vikings-in-minnesota-essentially-forever/

Heres an interesting tidbit from the football stadium bill introduced to the Minnesota Legislature on Friday. According to Mike Kaszuba of the Minneapolis Star Tribune, the Vikings would have to agree in exchange for the new stadium to transfer the teams name, logo, colors, history, playing records, and trophies to the state, if the team leaves at any point after the bill becomes law.

If the language makes it into the final bill and if the final bill is passed by the Legislature and signed by the Governor, the Vikings would essentially be tied to Minnesota forever.

Of course, if the team currently known as the Vikings ever leaves, the folks in Minnesota likely would have to wait for an expansion team or a relocated franchise before the 2-D horns could be dusted off and applied to a helmet again. But unlike the Lakers, a nickname that makes as much sense in L.A. as the Jazz does in Utah, the football franchise would not be permitted to take the identity of the team with it, if it moves.

That said, Kaszuba reports that the bill was met with little fanfare when it arrived on Friday, and that the philosophical debate regarding the use of public funds to pay for a football stadium remains, especially in light of ongoing budget issues. The fact that Republicans control both chambers of the Legislature means that the bill could languish. (Thats not political editorializing; its fact.)

And thats fine if it happens, as long as the folks involved understand the very real risk of losing the franchise and the teams name, logo, colors, history, playing records, and trophies if decisive action isnt taken during the current legislative session.

The task of relocating the Vikings trophies definitely sounds daunting.

Your comment was better than the blurb. Nice work.

Seriously, I don' see the bill passing. They keep bringing up new ideas for how the public could fund a large chunk of the price tag, and it they keep getting shot down. I don't see how this one is any different. Especially now that the Reps are in charge and trying to fix the Dem-created budget nightmare.

I like the idea of the identity of the team being tied to the State just as Cleveland was able to keep the Browns identity.
And I too was thinking that they will not have to rent a semi to load up all the Viking trophies well at least not all their Lombardi Trophies.

I never did understand the LA Lakers until looking it up. Minnesota is where the Lakers originated and it was a play on the Land of 10,000 lakes or something similar.

They moved to LA after 1959. They wore NC blue and yellow originally and didn't change to purple and yellow until 1967. So the Vikings were purple and yellow for a number of years before the Lakers were.

What's to stop the state from taking in all the Vikings stuff, just to turn around and sell it to whoever buys and moves the vikings? Government loves $$$ more than trophies, what's the point of a bunch of records and trophies lying around if the team moves? Sell them.

Minneapolis Lakers, you mean.

Bozz is right about the history of that team.

I'm obviously all for the state keeping the Vikings name, logo, colors, records, etc as owned by the state.

And the information I last heard about the public funds for this bill was as follows:

The public funds would come from 3 sources:
1) % tax on all team memorabilia sold in the state.
2) % tax on all Minnesota Vikings players' checks/bonuses.
3) % tax on state lottery.

The big kicker was the majority of the public funds would obviously come from the players' salaries/bonuses (not sure how that was worded). In this instance of using public funds to help pay for a stadium, I'm all for it. And they can do whatever the hell they want with the roof/no roof/retractable roof deal (even though I'm staunchly against a roof).

But, that information was what I heard/read about 2-3 weeks ago, so I could be just rehashing old news.
