Well, at least according to a sheriff's deputy that pulled me over Thursday. I was on my way down to school to work at lunch time in the lunch room when, "Whoop, Whoop Whoop" right behind me is a sheriff's car, light flashing........the whole nine yards. He walks over to the passenger side of my truck, right hand ready on his firearm in case I make a move for my tuna sandwich I'm eating.
"Is this your truck sir?"
"Yes sir. Paid for and runs like shit. You want to trade vehicles with me?"
"Can I see your drivers license and registration?" He's pretty serious looking, then back up arrives to help him out with the Lolo version of Ted Kaczinski.
I show him the items, then his back up deputy peers in the window and starts laughing like hell.
"Hey Bob....ya in to stealing trucks now?"
"Oh, hi Pat. What the hell's going on. And you know damn well I own this hunk of crap. You've been in it.
"We just got a report of a stolen truck from Trempers Shopping Center, and the descripton fits your truck to a tee. Even the plate number is only 4 numbers off. We gotta check all these out."
"Jeez Pat, if I was going to steal a truck it sure as hell wouldn't be this one. This was all I could afford at the time. Oh, and can you please turn off your damn flashing lights? People are staring. Now they're going to think they have a criminal for a substitute."
Deputy #1...."Sorry about that, but we have to check everything out. Say..........aren't you the guy that throws snowballs at Bison? I heard about that." Laughing hard now..."Now I'm really going to have to keep an eye on you. Snowballs at Bison, stealing trucks. I think Pat and I should just take you in for your own safety. Have a great day!"
Yeah, right! Better not leave the keys in your patrol car or it's gone!
I did an internship several summers ago with Deputy Pat Turner as a Bicycle Deputy. Rode around on bikes and snuck up on keggars and underage kids drinking up in the mountains. They don't realize until it's too late.......bikes don't make noise upon approach.
