Philadelphia found their next defensive coordinator in a surprising place: Their offensive coaching staff.

Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer reports Juan Castillo will be moved from offensive line coach to defensive coordinator. Long-time Colts offensive line coach Howard Mudd will take over the offensive line duties.

Mike Nolan once made a similar move from receivers coach to defensive coordinator in Baltimore. Bill Belichick was an offensive coach early in his career. With that said, there are few examples of coaches in this day of specialization making this kind of jump. Castillo hasnt coached defense since he was at a Texas high school in 1989.

Its a bold and possible defining move at a tenuous time in Andy Reids tenure in Philadelphia. There will be a ridiculous amount of pressure on Castillo, but the decision is so out-of-the-box that we are want to give it a chance.

UPDATE: The Eagles have confirmed the move.

What? No, this is good news because they aren't taking Perry, Greene, or one of our other positional coaches. Supposedly the Eagles were interested in those guys to fill their DC spot. I think Capers is here to stay long term. He referenced so in his media interview yesterday when he said,

"We have a lot of young talent on defense here but we are still in the early stages of what we hope to accomplish long term"

This was in reference to our 3-4 defense compared with what Capers built in Pittsburgh. He sounds like he wants to be here long term.

my mistake...although I don't necessarily gain much confidence in Capers' comments. If someone offerered him a HC job next year, I don't care what he is quoted as saying in the media, I can't imagine him not seriously considering offers.

ya this is awesome! ... glad our DB coaches are staying put. Got to hand it to those guys in what our secondary has done this year. I never thought Id see tramon stand up as well as he has.

Only thing I regret is harris not being here for the SB (Id really like it if he got a ring once we win the game 😉

If he wanted a HC job, he could put his name out there to the teams that were in need, and he would have a job before long. He knows that. He has tried coaching, and we all remember how that worked out, despite one good season with Carolina. He wants to stick to what he knows, especially since GB has so much more talent coming up.
