Flynn didn't do a bad job really. He made a couple mistakes that are not unheard of from a backup coming off the bench. Even starting QBs make bad decisions. In the 2nd 1/2 the team moved the all, 48 yards for a FG (possible TD if reviewed), 80 yards for a INT, and 59 on the last drive.
The world needs ditch diggers too Danny!!!

Kitna was 16-33, 187 yds in the game Romo got injured. 73 of those came in the last 1:45 during garbage time, when the Giants were in a prevent defense.

Give Flynn a week to prepare (like Kitna is getting now) and I'd expect improved performance just from having more reps to get in synch with his receivers. And as the season progressed, I'd expect that performance to keep improving.

The writer is NOT comparing apples to apples, and is full of crap, IMO.

I think Flynn will be good reason he is poised on the field,he has a strong arm thats is why he is still here and Brohm is not,I think given time he will be very good, think he can carry the team if needed better than some regular q.b out there.

I agree that he has poise, which is huge for a QB. I never got the sense that he was panicking. I didn't see a strong arm, though. That was the most disappointing aspect of his performance. His deep throws lacked authority. They seemed to flutter and they were off target. If he's not able to make at least some of those throws in future appearances, he will have very limited usefulness as an NFL QB. Maybe he could play as a backup for a run-oriented team, but that's not going to get it done with a team like the Packers, not even as a backup.

I'm not writing him off yet, but I actually would've felt better about him if he had more zip on the ball but was less poised. Poise can come with experience, but three years into his career, I would think that his arm strength is pretty much maxed out.

Do you think that the pressure or perceived pressure had an effect on his throws?

I would think that has some to do with it.. not all QB's can get away with the all arm throws that we have been spoiled with in Rodgers and Brett.

Obviously we're better with Rodgers playing, however, while he is out and Flynn is practicing with our #1 offense, I think he'll be better. I also like the fact that we will be dumbing down the play book for him if he starts. Look for mismatches and an quick throwing game. It's what we should have been relying on all along. Get back to the basics. Oh and fire the OL coach.

This isn't to bash Matt Flynn, but that's one of the most common things I find people missing the point on. If we went out and played football right now, I was QB and there was NO pass rush, I'd hit nearly every single receiver in stride. I'm not saying I should be in the NFL, there's no chance, because once you put 4 DL wanting to rip my head off, I suddenly would become Anthony Dilweg.

My point here is being able to throw while under pressure is what makes a good quarterback, great. Any QB can hit targets with no rush, especially QB's in the NFL. Add a pass rush and suddenly they become human again.

I believe Flynn has some excellent poise in the pocket, similar to Rodgers, and if given more opportunities and a stronger arm, he could be a starter, albeit in the 20 - 25 best in NFL.

My question.. which I framed poorly was directed at the lack of arm strength.. basically not stepping through with zip on the ball that Greg stated was lacking.

Most QB's without a hose for an arm.. need to put more than just their arm into it, footwork and stepping through a major component in that.

His arm strength was a big let down.

We knew he didn't have a cannon when he came into the league. One of the big reasons he fell so far. I hoped McCarthy and his coaching staff would've done something about it, but if this is all they can get out of him, it's not that good.

On short completions, he just didn't seem to have any zip on the ball. It was decent, good enough to make some completions, but not something you would throw into tight windows with.

On the long balls, he seems to have to put everything he has into it, effecting his accuracy.

That was my only problem with the deep ball on 4th and 1, as well. You have Flynn in there, someone who has a weak arm and is under quite some pressure in his first meaningful NFL time. The chances that he completes that pass aren't that high.

wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
