Surgeons remove two fetuses from infant

Two-month-old Pakistani girl in critical condition after operation

[img_r]http://msnbcmedia2.msn.com/j/ap/isl10303281532.grid-6x2.jpg[/img_r]ISLAMABAD, Pakistan Surgeons operated on a 2-month-old Pakistani girl Tuesday to remove two fetuses that had grown inside her while she was still in her mother's womb, a doctor said.

The infant, who was identified only as Nazia, was in critical condition following the two-hour operation at The Children's Hospital at Pakistan Institute of Medical Science in the capital, Islamabad, said Zaheer Abbasi, head of pediatric surgery at the hospital.

Abbasi, the chief doctor who led the operation, said the case was the first he was aware of in Pakistan of fetus-in-fetu, where a fetus has grown inside another in the womb.

"It is extremely rare to have two fetuses being discovered inside another," Abbasi told The Associated Press, adding that he did not know what caused the medical abnormality. "Basically, it's a case of triplets, but two of the
siblings grew in the other."

The baby comes from Abbotabad, about 30 miles north of Islamabad. She is the fifth child of a woman in her 30s, who was at the hospital to be with her daughter. Her father works in the Arabian Gulf.

Abbasi said surgeons removed the two partially grown fetuses, totaling about two pounds, that had died at about 4 months.

Other fetus-in-fetu cases have been reported elsewhere in the world. A report in a June 2000 issue of the U.S. journal Pediatrics called such occurrences rare and estimated their rate at about 1 per 500,000 births.

This developmental abnormality, known as fetus in fetu, definitely tests the limits of one's pro-life fanaticism, even though I don't think it should. My mother would probably say that it's wrong -- murder -- to remove the two growths from inside the baby. The problem with that position is those "fetuses" are literally parasites that if not removed will eventually kill the child. I don't think it's fair to say, "Well, it's not up to us to choose who lives and dies," because these parasites aren't alive in the strictest sense of the word (beyond the barest essentials of cellular replication, anyway): they almost always lack brains, they usually lack other internal organs, and they are utterly reliant upon their sibling host for whatever semblance of survival they have. I believe in the sanctity of human life, but I don't see how these growths, which are functionally no different than violently malignant tumors, are human in any meaningful sense. In my opinion, it shouldn't even be a consideration that they wouldn't be removed, but there will always be objections raised by some, just as there are with ectopic pregnancies.

By the way, there is a very subtle example of political correctness in this article that I find quite amusing. +1 to whomever has the multicultural awareness to catch it.

Ooh ooh I want +1! Is it the name change from Persian Gulf to Arabian Gulf?

When you try to simplify the amazing complexity of existence into black and white, life and no-life, etc., problems are bound to arise. The very idea that life just magically begins 100% at a certain moment has always mystified me.

Well, that kinda shoots down the whole black and white pro-lifer thing, eh?

You got it, Mass. The term "Arabian Gulf" was used to placate any Arabs who might be reading the article, since they take great offense to the term "Persian Gulf."

Formo, the idea isn't as farfetched as you might think. My mother opposes the removal of ectopic pregnancies, even though the possibility of survival is zero and they represent a real threat to the woman. If someone believes that life begins at conception and that therefore these deformed fetuses have souls, they might argue that even though they are reliant on the developed twin for survival, they shouldn't be removed. I personally think if someone is on a ventilator and has no chance of ever breathing on his own, he's dead; but there are plenty of people who believe it's immoral to shut the machine up. It's not much of a leap to say it's immoral to remove these growths, even though scientifically, they're not alive.

I don't even know what that means (the ectopic bit), so I can't really opine on that.

Are you talking like Siamese twins, or something different?

You mean shut the machine off. 🙂 The only time I, a moralistic Christian an pro-lifer, would ever condone an abortion would if it the fetus was a legitimate threat to the life of the mother / other babies in the womb, but only as a last-ditch effort.

I can completely understand why one would oppose or form the argument against that type of abortion, but often times the facts about a situation has to be a big part of the decision to make that choice. In in that case, you have to make the choice for the long term. I couldn't fault the couple for making a decision like that.
