Cullen Jenkins injury a 'concern' for Green Bay Packers

The Packers might have lost defensive end Cullen Jenkins for at least a week and perhaps longer just when he appeared to be back to playing his best football.

Jenkins had two sacks Sunday that gave him a career-high seven for the season, but he re-injured his calf in late in the game. Hes already missed one game because of the injury, the Packers win over Minnesota on Oct. 24, when he sustained the injury in warm-ups.

Jenkins was badly limping when he left the field Sunday and was unavailable for comment after the game.

You really dont know until (Monday), coach Mike McCarthy said of the severity of the injury. Anytime you have a strain, particularly of a muscle its the same one that hes strained in the past, so thats the concern there.

The Packers had two other injuries of note Sunday, knee sprains to fullback Korey Hall and receiver Brett Swain. McCarthy gave no indication of the severity of the injuries.
Four-man front

Dom Capers, the Packers defensive coordinator, normally runs his base 3-4 defense on early downs against an opponents run-oriented personnel, but against San Francisco he occasionally used a four-man defensive line instead.

The group usually consisted of ends Jenkins and Ryan Pickett, and tackles B.J. Raji and Howard Green. However, it wasnt a standard 4-3 defense, because the extra defensive lineman replaced safety Charlie Peprah, giving the Packers four linemen, four linebackers and three defensive backs.

Capers came out in that alignment on the games first play, and the 49ers attempted a bomb to receiver Michael Crabtree that was overthrown. He used it on about six snaps total. The 49ers had incompletions on two of them, rushed for three yards on two others combined, then had runs of 17 yards and five yards by halfback Anthony Dixon.

Capers went to the four-man front because the 49ers last week against Arizona rushed for 261 yards, and on 21 plays used a two tight-end, two running back personnel set.

Arizona had a really hard time with it (last week), Capers said, and we saw quite a bit of (two tight ends and two backs) out of the Falcons the week before, 14, 15 snaps there, so I figured (the 49ers) had a lot of good stuff to look at with the Falcons stuff against us. So we started the game in that, and you saw them throw the ball deep on us on the first play. We anticipated that, they saw us trot big people out there and three DBs on the field that they were going to try to take shots up the field.

I didnt feel at any time we were really struggling stopping the run. They got a couple runs on us to their two tight end side but not like watching them last week against Arizona, because it was six, seven yards a crack and theyd break a 15, 20 yarder out of there too.

Something seriously has to be wrong with our training staff. This is INSANE. For all the talk the Colts get for having so many injuries, our situation is far worse.

No. I said this back around week 4 or week 5. Lovie Smith did a voodoo curse on us. It would be justice if we knock them out of the Playoffs.

I heard he injured it goofing around in pregame warmups, kicking field goals.

Packers defensive end Cullen Jenkins wont play against the Detroit Lions on Sunday because of a calf sprain suffered against San Francisco, according to Packers coach Mike McCarthy, and could also miss the game after that against the New England Patriots.

Jenkins was carted off Lambeau Field in the second half on Sunday after re-injuring the calf that has bothered him for much of the season.

McCarthy said at his press conference this morning that Jenkins feels better today than he did yesterday, but he is expected to miss a couple of weeks. That likely mean Jenkins will miss the Packers road game at New England on Dec. 19.

Jenkins has been playing well, according to McCarthy, and losing him will be significant to the Packers defense. Jenkins recorded two sacks against the 49ers to boost his season total to a career high seven.

He'll be back for the playoffs. Sure would be nice to have him against New England though.

beast (15h) : But the Return from IR designations had to be applied by the 53 man cutdown.
beast (15h) : It's a new rule, so it's not clear, but my understanding was that they could be IR'd at any time
Mucky Tundra (20h) : *had to be IRed at 53
Mucky Tundra (20h) : beast, I thought the designate return from IR players had to be IR at cutdowns to 53, not before
beast (21h) : It's a brand new rule, either last season or this season, prior, all pre-season IRs were done for the season
beast (21h) : But the Packers would have to use one for their return from IR spots on him, when they cut down to 53.
beast (21h) : I think the NFL recently changed the IR rules, so maybe the season might not be over for OL Glover.

Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Oo just saw a blurb saying that Dallas negotiated directly with Parsons and not through his agent
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : I assumed that both guys will get paid, just a matter of when or how we get there
Zero2Cool (1-Aug) : McLaurin nor Micah going anywhere. They will get money
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : the Synder years or do they take care of one of their own?
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Do the Commanders risk losing a top WR with an emerging QB just because he's turning 30 and potentially risk damaging the rebuild from
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : Turns 30 this September, plays at a high level and Washington has some cap space I believe
Mucky Tundra (1-Aug) : More interesting is Washington with Terry McLaurin
