May I ask what the origin of rifle drills like this, are?

Is it just for entertainment and is the domain of a specialised cohort like the Blue Angels or is it something most soldiers practice?

Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.

The United States Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon is a 24-man rifle platoon that performs a unique precision drill exhibition. This highly disciplined platoon exemplifies the professionalism associated with the United States Marine Corps.

The Silent Drill Platoon first performed in the Sunset Parades of 1948 and received such an overwhelming response that it soon became a regular part of the parades at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C.

The Marines execute a series of calculated drill movements and precise handling of their hand-polished, 10 and one-half pound, M-1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets. The routine concludes with a unique rifle inspection sequence demonstrating elaborate rifle spins and tosses.

These Marines are individually selected from the Schools of Infantry located in Camp Pendleton, CA and Camp Lejune, NC from interviews conducted by Barracks personnel. Once selected, Marines are assigned to Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. to serve a 2-year ceremonial tour. Beyond their ceremonial duties, the Marines collaterally train in the field as infantrymen. Throughout the year, these Marines hone their infantry skills at the Marine Corps Combat Development Command in Quantico, VA and other bases.

Experienced members of the Silent Drill Platoon have the opportunity to audition to become Rifle Inspectors. They must go through inspection tryouts graded by the Rifle Inspectors of the previous year. Only two Marines per year are selected to become Rifle Inspectors. They, along with the Platoon Drill Master, are entrusted with keeping and passing on the unique knowledge and traditions of the Silent Drill Platoon.

Once the year's Silent Drill Platoon Marines are selected each fall, they begin their rigorous training at Marine Barracks, Washington D.C. and later move to Marine Corps Air Station, Yuma, AZ in order to perfect the routine. Throughout the year, they perform in front of hundreds of thousands of spectators at Marine Barracks, Washington, D.C. and at numerous events across the United States and abroad.

The origin for rifle drills like this date back to the days of line warfare. Massed troop movements were required to be performed with precision on the battlefield, while prompt and accurate manual of arms (the different movements w/rifle or sword) and reloading were required to defeat your enemy. When you could maneuver, reload and fire faster than your enemy, you'd likely win.

Remember, these were the days of marching large groups until they were a hundred yards or so away, stand, then fire on order from your officers. Napoleonic warfare has thankfully passed by the wayside.

Currently, these are the types of movements that all troops learn in their basic training but are now only used for dress parades to impress their parents and the public at graduation parades, etc. By parade, I mean a military parade on a drill field and not a Main St. parade.

This unit, is like the Blue Angels or the Army's Leap Frogs jump team. An example of the best of the best showing their capabilities to the General Public to support the recruiting effort.

Take dfosterf's advice. If you are in DC in the summer, the sunset parade at the Iwo Jima Marine Corps memorial is impressive to watch. They come magically appear from behind the base of the statue like the semi trucks in Convoy. They just keep coming! Also, the show at the Marine Barracks at 8th & I would be a night to remember. I've seen both.

Actually, it goes back far farther than Napoleon.

If you want to see a bit different version of "mass drill" in action...check out the movie Red Cliff.

I haven't been able to watch the whole thing yet (it runs close to 5 hours), but based on what I have seen, I think it's going to easily make my top ten, subtitles and all.

And while much of it is Woo's choreography....it really highlights just how precise war had to be for a very long time.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

I just watched about 10 minutes of Red Cliff on Netflix web site. It looks like a great movie. The cinematography is amazing.

dfosterf (27-Aug) : Clayton Tune cut by the Cards? Don't know if that's the guy, we shall see
TheKanataThrilla (27-Aug) : Per Bill Huber, the Packers will not be bringing back Taylor Elgersma or Sean Clifford on the practice squad, so a new third quarterback
Mucky Tundra (27-Aug) : Schefter must have deleted his tweet
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Hopefully Jerry reaches under the seat cushions and ashtrays of his jet and scrapes up the 45 million apr and spares us further nonsense
dfosterf (27-Aug) : Have to admit the PO'd Cowboy fan videos would be fun to watch. Problem with draft picks is half their fanbase barely knows what that is
beast (27-Aug) : I think Cowboys fans are ready to get their pitch forks and burning sticks if Jerry were to trade Micah
dfosterf (27-Aug) : If Jerry traded Micah to GB, here in northern Va. they would have to quick build yet another data center to handle the internet hate traffic
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : its signing and trades that you don't hear about, other then announced
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : If you hear rumors about Packers sign or trade, won't happen. Not how they work
dfosterf (27-Aug) : 19 players in a contract year. Jones called loss to us worst loss in Cowboy history. Forget Parsons trade. Not happenin' Cap'n
packerfanoutwest (27-Aug) : The Packers, meanwhile, are the youngest team in the league for the third consecutive year.
dfosterf (27-Aug) : That it was darkest before the dawn in Bengals and Commanders before they got deals done
Zero2Cool (27-Aug) : what is Schefter saying?
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He was getting Dorito infusion therapy
dfosterf (27-Aug) : He's outta shape. Why, just the other day I saw him splayed out on the trainers table
