From Mike McCarthy presser  this afternoon..

RB James Starks may have to be active this week. Asked if he was ready, McCarthy said, "He better be."

* Edit.. Forgot the ever precious link. ;)

By the way, the reason Starks may play is that Nance suffered a concussion on Sunday, so his status is up in the air.

I was thinking this would be the game for Starks to make his debut anyway. The last two games were on astroturf--not the best surface for a guy coming back from an injury. Also, this game is against a weaker opponent, so it's a better opportunity for a little bit of experimenting.

Turf would have been great for a guy with 4.5 speed.

It is also very hard on a players body. Whether he has 4.5 speed or not, everybody else is faster on turf, and everybody else is slower on grass, so that argument doesn't really matter IMO.

I got it! We'll put artificial turf on the bottoms of his shoes! That way he's running on turf and everyone else is on natural grass!

Nance Cleared, Will Compete With Starks

By Aaron Nagler on Dec 03, 2010 with 1 Comments

Interesting choice of words from Mike McCarthy when asked about Dimitri Nance being back at practice and what that meant for James Starks' chance at being active on Snday.

Nance was cleared to practice yesterday after he suffered a concussion in the Atlanta game. During his Monday press conference, McCarthy had indicated that Starks "better be" ready because there would possibly be an opportunity for him to be active on Sunday with Nance's situation up in the air.

But now, with Nance back in the mix, McCarthy and his staff are apparently going to use the "practice environment" (McCarthy's phrase) to gather as much information on Starks as they can before making a decision between the two rookie running backs.

From McCarthy:

Dimitri has completed the process and practiced today, and well have Dimitri and James pretty much compete throughout the week, and well address that at the end of the week.

I think for James Starks to play in the game, you have to trust your practice environment because thats all the preparation he has. Thats the facts. If James is ready to play, if we feel that he is ready to play and contribute to us winning the game, thats when hell play, and thats the bottom line.

For his part, Starks seems to believe that he'll be active on Sunday regardless of what happens with Nance. As he told reporters after practice, he has been working on special teams for the first time since coming off the physically unable to perform list. In fact, he reportedly spent an extra 30 minutes with Special Teams coach Shawn Slocum after practice on Thursday going over questions he had for Slocum.

From Starks:

Just plays, the man Id have to cover if different situations occur, what Im supposed to do in those situations. We went in-depth on everything, cleared my mind a little better, now I know who I have, I know my assignments a lot better.

As McCarthy often says, the best route onto the game day active roster for young players is through special teams. It would seem, regardless of Dimitri Nance's status, James Starks could finally get on the football field on Sunday.

Put 'em all in pads and let the ones go against the ones full-blow, full-contact.

One friggin' practice.

Outdoors.

Run Starks straight up the gut, repeatedly.

God forbid in this modern-day NFL.

On behalf of the entire Packer nation, I apologize, Vince.

What would happen if we ran some of these old formations?

By the way, judging by that video, NFL defenses didn't tackle any better in 1944 than they do today.
