GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Green Bay Packers linebacker Frank Zombo said Thursday he was fined $7,500 by the NFL for his hit on Chicago Bears quarterback Jay Cutler on Monday night.

Zombo was penalized for roughing the passer after making contact with Cutler's helmet on the hit during the fourth quarter of a loss to the Bears. The penalty wiped out an interception by linebacker Nick Barnett and helped the Bears drive for a tying field goal.

Zombo said he didn't disagree with the penalty, which he said was the result of aggressive play. Zombo is expected to start Sunday's game against the Detroit Lions.

As for the fine, he said, "It's going to hurt."

Zombo is an undrafted free agent making $320,000 this season.

That was a really rough hit. Wasn't sure whether or not it would be reviewed or not. You know the NFL and their quarterbacks...

$320k a year isn't that much when you consider the average football player plays what, 3 seasons? Then has $100k in medical bills + therapy afterward.

Plus, the money is made in your early 20s when most of us, myself included, are stupid with money.

On top of that, when someone makes a big wad of money all of a sudden, watch how fast old friends and struggling family members come out of the woods.

That is bullshit. It's not like he did it on purpose...he spun off the lineman into Cutler and that pussy cried about it.

I hate this rule and I hate Jay Cutler.

I agree with the call and the fine (becuse it was definitely in the head), but you know what? This is the NFL. People get hurt. It's football.

I'm sorry that Cutler got his bean rung, but this will pay dividends in the next game. It was, as you say, an accident and not deliberate. But Cutler will remember it next game, and the Bears still suck. It also sucks that Zombo got fined, but his aggressiveness is essential.

That hit didn't look much different from the one Rodgers took in overtime of last season's playoff loss to the Cardinals. Just saying.

These fines have become almost automatic, which makes them pretty much meaningless. They should only fine players for blatant cheap shots, and when that happens, they should add a suspension to give the rule some real teeth.

I think the way this is handled now is just another example of the NFL trying to look like they are doing the right thing. But the fines mean little, even to the lower-paid players, because their ability to earn a big paycheck in the future depends on them being very aggressive.

buckeyepackfan (11m) : I forgot, they corrected the call a week later. Lol btw HAPPY BIRTHDAY dhazer!
buckeyepackfan (12m) : That brings up the question, why wasn't Nixon down by contact? I think that was the point Kanata was making.

beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.

beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
