Good point. I'm just referring to the big games, when our pass rush seemed to vanish. Vikings I, Vikings II, Steelers, Cardinals II all come to mind.

vik II bigby was out wasnt he ... then we had martin in there trying to play safety which fucked up the symmetry that harris had with bigby.

steelers - harris out again

cards II - bush (need I say more), and harris still out.

IMO this defense would work wonders if dom kept to his plan of pressuring the QB and if we have our starters in there in the secondary.
Either one of those are not then we suffer ...

what those games have shown us is that we are going to be fighting an uphill battle against top passing offenses without some help in the secondary. Hopefully our healing CBs can play at a high level next year. And, here's where I'm at right now, I am fed up with Bigby's hot/cold play. I don't want him on our defense anymore. He's not cutting it. What's his contract situation? If it's me making the decisions, it's time to cut ties with Bigby.

Bush is the #6 CB on the roster. He's a special teams player who was thrust into the lineup after 3 of our CBs went on IR. So, I can't be too upset about our #6 CB for getting beat. It sucked, but what can you expect from the guy.

You can see that he's a run support guy, mainly. He makes flashy plays, big hits and what not, but, like you said, is real up and down when it comes to regular plays and getting in position.

I had hoped that Nick Collins could pretty much roam in our backfield while Bigby played more of an eighth man in the box. I could even see him play some sort of a tampa 2 LBer, clogging up that midfield, since our ILBs are always out of position when they have to cover the middle.

But, apparently, Dom didn't think about it that way. I just think that Bigby might not fit into this new system perfectly.

What if we traded up to the 5th pick and selected Eric Berry?... We'd have two potential all-pros at safety. Nick Collins and a guy who has been slated as the 'next Ed Reed'. I don'tk now how good a duo it'd be in run support, but throwing deep would be one dangerous affair.

Of course, that'd cost us half our picks in the 2010 draft and some more in the 2011 one. It's more of a dream than anything else. Lol.

Anyway, congrats to Capers. He really turned this defense around. It's a shame that it came to such a horrible end this season. Let's hope that we can address stuff like this in this long off-season.

Capers did a good job. You have to consider he was using 4-3 players in a 3-4 scheme and turned one of the worst run defenses into the best. Also the fact that 3 of the teams top 5 cornerbacks were on IR for most of the season.

I think the Pack needs to improve with another linebacker that can rush the QB to make the defense better. Jones did OK as a rookie. If Kampan was in the game he would have gotten better and is great against the run. His sacks would have improved. Now the only concern is his pass defense.
He would have applied some more pressure on Warner a little more and that alone might have made the difference in the Cardinal or Steeler game.

I would also like to add that Al Harris was also a big key to those two loses. He would have made a huge difference too.

I agree that Capers did a good job. My only contention was that he seemed to get intimidated by top-flight quarterbacks.

To my thinking this is probably closest to the truth. We talk a lot about how the defense did well against "bad" teams, but I don't think there are all that many truly bad teams - there are poorly-prepared teams and teams that come out flat on gameday, but these are all professional football players.

Vikings I & II were instances where, in my opinion, the D hadn't gelled yet - they were still struggling with the transition. And they were playing arguably the best QB in NFL history. As far as the Steelers and Cardinals, we were playing with a severely depleted secondary - if ole number 24 is on the field, that's a problem. This doesn't mean there aren't some issues with the scheme against the pass, but I don't believe any scheme can make up for insufficient personnel.

I'm an optimist, and there's no question in my mind that the defense as a whole showed marked improvement this year. Going in to next season I'd love to see some quality additions to the secondary, specifically at safety, but I'm also optimistic that guys like Lee and Underwood will step up and show us all something good. Add that to another offseason of development (both the players in the scheme and Capers getting a better understanding of how to use those players), and I'm feeling good about the immediate future of the defense.
