They like to blather on Fox Sports Radio about how the media is nothing more nor less than a reflection of the public -- how they only give us what we want to hear. I call bullshit. I guarantee if NFL commentators did an honest on-air poll of the viewership, asking if they should devote so much airtime to Brett Favre, the answer would be an overwhelming NO.

Media personalities admit that the reason why they fellate Favre so copiously is he gives them unprecedented access to him. Most professional sports players aren't so available. It's because THEY like him so much, not because WE like him so much, that they drool over him incessantly.

Brett Favre isn't bigger than the game. He's just bigger than the commentators' capacity for self-control.

You guys don't like it because it confirms what most people don't like to admit. Brett Favre is bigger than the Jets. He's bigger than the Vikings and he's bigger than the Packers. He is always the biggest story in the game he is playing. Good or bad, the newspapaers, the talk shows, the pre game, the off season. It all revolves around "is he coming back" or "what can he do for this team or that team" or "what do former players think about him".

Reggie White, Jerry Rice. Probably 2 of the 5 or 10 best players of all time. When they retired, barely a blip on the radar when they went to other teams late in their career or retired. Face it, He IS bigger than the game.

This post is about as smart as saying that men did not land on the moon because no one streamed it via YouTube, LIVE.

Times change. The internet is far more relevant now than it was when White retired FOR A YEAR then asked for his release and joined the Panthers. As for Rice, it was a huge thing when he left the 49ers to the Raiders, at least it was on ESPN.

Favre is not bigger than the Packers, but he provides a good drama story as well as played for nearly TWO decades which means MANY are familiar with his name and play, thus, peaks interest.

The one I've got sick of is Deirdorf doing Peyton Manning games. Those are the only ones I'll mute

This raises an interesting point. What if the order of tech development were reversed and YouTube somehow preceded the moon landing. I'm betting that we'd be well past Mars with manned space development by now.

But I'm doubtless a romantic.
