I still don't understand why we don't bring in the last coach that was able to instill a sense of invincibility into Crosby.

The only thing he'll kick through the uprights this year is possibly a chance at the Super Bowl. It's gonna come down to a close game in one of the next two (or the playoffs) and he'll cost us a game. I don't understand why we even let him kick from the right hashmark anymore. Can't we just move to the left side and hope for the best if we're gonna have him kick.

The thing about Crosby currently is that he's in a mental slump.

Bringing in another kicker isn't going to light a fire under Crosby because he's ALREADY thinking that he's lost his job (until McCarthy came out and said that Crosby will be our kicker). Bringing in someone would have just worsened Crosby's resolve and he probably would have just given up then and there. McCarthy is trying to instill that confidence, that swagger back into Crosby.

If your child fails a test you don't go to him and say you're going to start supporting his brother/sis more because of his failure. You sit him down on 1 knee and tell him that it's not the end of the world, that his skill is just too great and that he'll recover and be fine. As much as I hate our skill players being emotionally fragile, that is currently what Crosby is and in a way, McCarthy is right to be standing behind him the way he has.

However, being that the NFL is a business, if McCarthy has a viable replacement ready and rearing to go and believed in that kicker, Crosby could be gone tomorrow irrespective of what is said today.

Good points Engineer. I feel there are a couple reasons behind keeping him.

A) He was a draft pick of ours so it would be admitting failure to a degree. You just don't cut someone that you spent that much time evaluating.
B) The talent pool for kickers is low right now and picking up a new kicker would be a rash decision. Crosby still has time to figure this out, it's not like he's eliminated us from the playoffs, in fact are road to the playoffs really couldn't seem much easier despite a heartbreaking loss.
C) The guy has an enormous wealth of talent. If we were to cut Crosby I bet plenty of teams would dump a roster spot just to get at him. Just look at the Cowboys. Washington cut Suisham because he missed and now the Cowboys have picked him up. People from other organizations would love to take a look at a guy like Crosby.
D) Face it, kickers miss field goals. It's something as a coach you'd like to be automatic but just like anything else in the sports world it's not.
E) If you dissect his last four misses all around the 35-45 yard range he's kicked the exact same miss. It's from the right hashmark and he barely misses it. It's not like the guy is kicking them ridiculously wide right. This is obviously a problem in his kicking motion or technique from that side of the field if it shows up consistently and probably is an easy fix. I know you'll get on me for saying that i.e., "well why hasn't he fixed it by now?" In all seriousness I believe he has. He says he rarely misses a kick in practice or before the game. If he can just settle down he has the talent and tools to be a great kicker.

Lastly, I have to say is look at our punting situation. We have Kapinos after we cut Ryan for Frost last year because Ryan made a few consistent mistakes. Ryan is with Seattle now where he hasn't reproduced any of those mistakes and is a decent punter. Kapinos was recently ranked by Sports Illustrated as 32nd (dead last) in the league. If we cut Crosby, he could be picked up by another team and have fixed his right hashmark kicking problem making us look stupid, while on the other end we bring in a guy that has only proven he can kick in a tryout.

It's a dumb decision to make this late in the season.

The misses I've seen were on the right hash mark and just right of the right goal post.

I've been saying it was his kicking motion or approach for some time now so I checked his first game as a Rookie and the motion looked the same, with the exception that it appears he's more straight forward now. Bad explanation there, in his rookie year it looked like he was farther to the left than he is now.

I think you only have to go back like 4 or 5 games to see that he has changed his approach.

He was missing LEFT. You and I were commenting about it in chat at the the time. I distinctly recall wishing out loud that Mason needs to try and aim for the right pylon. I swear, his next kick- It looked like he was aiming for the right pylon, and he made the field goal. GTG, I was thinking...Then the coaches got a-hold of him, or something- I have noticed that he is in fact lining up more "in-line" than he was prior to my "whack pronouncements week" on what he should/should not be aiming at.

I'm almost willing to be that if someone has vid. of him kicking earlier in the year- we will see that he was lined up more "left", and he was also more "hooky".

Now he is "more better" hook-wise, but is "pushing" the ball. It's like he is over-correcting to one side, then the other. Pushing is better than hooking, as far as consistency and adjusting goes, he just needs to find (and keep) his spot. Neither one of them are so hot when it neither hooks or pushes between those two yellow poles sticking up in the air.

My main gripe is that we brought this guy in for his leg.

His rookie season was just short of sensational. Okay, I don't want to go that far, but he was serviceable. Led the NFC in points scored.

But from Crosby, I at least expect him to be kicking touchbacks consistently. He doesn't even do that anymore. WTF happened?

He isn't kicking touchbacks because of our special teams. He is kicking them short on purpose. I am not complaining because its working.

Vandermause said:

Crosby was outstanding during a training camp battle with Dave Rayner in 2007. Maybe he needs that kind of competitive edge to stay sharp.

Kind of hard to have a competitive edge, when there is no competition, or no chance that he will lose his job.

Again, I remember the same talk last year. "You can't cut Derrick Frost mid season. There are NO other punters out there! NONE!"

Then what does MM do? He cuts Frost during the season. And the punting improved. Didn't improve by much. But it improved.

Crosby has been sub par for 3 years now, and all everyone wants to do is coddle him. Well I'm not wired that way. If someone isn't doing their job, they should be challenged. And telling him, "You need to make your kicks" isn't good enough.

At the very least, the Packers should have held some try outs. What harm could that do? And don't tell me, "that would put too much pressure on Mason."

You're damn right that would but pressure on his ass. As it is now, there is no chance that he will lose his job, so why should he improve? To say that no competition should be brought in, because it would put pressure on Mason, is one of the most ridiculous things I have ever heard in my life. The NFL IS competition.

Bleh, I might as well be talking to the wall.

I'm going to have to call bullshit on the Frost comment. I can't remember a single comment that said to keep him. There was no light at the end of the tunnel for Frost.
