Packers Sign WR Williams, Release WR Ealy

The Green Bay Packers have signed WR Patrick Williams from the practice squad and released WR Biren Ealy. Ted Thompson, Executive Vice President, General Manager and Director of Football Operations, announced the transactions Tuesday.

A 6-foot-1, 204-pound rookie from Colorado, Williams originally signed with the Packers as a non-drafted free agent in May. He spent the last seven weeks on the Packers' practice squad.

Williams will wear No. 18.

Ealy played in one game for the Packers and was a gameday inactive five times.

I suppose since Finley lines up at that 5th receiver spot most of the time now when the offense goes 5 wide, it doesn't really matter who holds that spot on the roster since they'll probably be a game day inactive if the big four are all able to go.

We didn't have a WR with a low number since Swain went down. So we needed one.

In comparison, Jordy Nelson ran a 4.49. Patrick Williams ran a 4.52.

Then again, Webb 'only' ran a 4.46, as well.

I don't know why we are so upset about having Jordy return kicks, though. You don't just pick up a Joshua Cribbs or a Desmond Howard. On kick-offs, Nelson has been very solid. If it wasn't for our team constantly holding on STs, we'd actually have one returned for a TD.

Punts, on the other hand, should be left for Blackmon. I really hope that he comes back strong next year.

As to Patrick Williams, he'll have to make some big progression from his college play to the NFL. His best season in college was one in which he caught a whopping 30 balls for 322 yards.
