I've went near 70 before and 109 before, there's a huge difference. And if you can't tell you're bushwhacking the century mark, you shouldn't be driving.

Peterson May Get More Than A Ticket And Reduced Playing Time

By Adam Warwas

My initial post in regards to Adrian Petersons ticket for driving 54 MPH faster than he should have been in a 55 MPH zone suggested that the worst Peterson should expect is the ticket and perhaps spending some time on the bench.

That may not be true. His punishment may be more severe than that.

In 2005, Minnesota passed a law stating that anyone caught driving over 100 MPH would have their license revoked. Minnesota State Senator Steve Murphy, who sponsored that law, thinks Peterson will pay the same price as anyone else that drives that fast.

Mr. Peterson is going to be walking for a little while. Thats an automatic suspension for anything over 100 mph, Murphy said. Just because he can go 100 mph on the football field doesnt mean he needs to go 100 mph on our roads.

Peterson can, of course, challenge the citation within 21 days from when it was written. This would require a court appearance.

Murphy also said, Maybe Adrians miscue will save the life of someone else and thats the good that can come out of this.

Minnesota State Patrol Captain Matt Langer, who was not the officer that stopped Peterson, gave the Associated Press this quote to put the speed at which Peterson was driving into context. He said, Any time you speed at all its dangerous, but to that extreme its just absolutely ridiculous.

In the same article, Brad Childress offered up weird quote on the matter. I dont know. Id stay out of the police industry, if that in fact is true, Childress said, adding: You got to take care of yourself. You cant put yourself in harms way. Anybody get what hes trying to say? I dont.

Childress did not say if Peterson would face punishment from the team.

I would be surprised if the hammer did not fall fairly hard and swift on Peterson from the powers-at-be within the Vikings organization.

In an effort to get public funding for a new stadium, Zygi Wilf and company have gone to great lengths to preach and practice high character in regards to their players off the field actions. Since trouble seemed to follow many Vikings players around prior to 2006, the Wilfs have managed to field a team of players that (for the most part) have been squeaky clean off the field.

Wilf will not be happy to see the image of the Vikings team gain a tarnish, no matter how insignificant people might feel this incident was, during their final push to get funding for a stadium.

Wilf will try to deal with any obstacles in his way of getting that funding, and Adrian Peterson is not exempt from being viewed as an obstacle that needs to be dealt with.

My guess is that Peterson will see some time on the bench very soon.

My other guess is that Sidney Rice will not find it so funny if Peterson steals his car during training camp again.

Until the Vikings remove Bryant Mckinnie from their team for eating out a stripper on the Love Boat, that code of conduct they fling out in the press is just one old flaming hypocrytical pile of bovine fecal matter.

As for Peterson, well let's just say he's a very young man who did something stupid. Butterfingers will just have to pay his fine and then accept whatever punishment the righteous Brad Childress gives out. Should go over well with him someday when he is an unrestricted free agent.

I will say that I like automatic revocation laws about as much as I like drug prohibition days. I am an excellent driver with a squeaky-clean record (other than the ticket mentioned above). In my pre-fatherhood days, I once drove my wife and I from Fayetteville, NC, to Orlando, FL, down I-95 in my manual-transmission Honda Accord cruising between 110 and 130 the whole way, and I never posed a danger to anyone. In fact, I would argue that the Europeans have a point and humans drive better at higher speeds (assuming no impairment, obviously), because greater vigilance is required.

On the trip I describe here, I met a German family in an Orlando hotel. The father told us that driving in the USA terrifies him, because he always finds himself falling asleep at the wheel, and so he guesses everyone around him is doing the same. He said he believes that one of the reasons why Americans have higher auto-accident fatality rates than Europeans is they drive too slow for their own good and essentially drive in a trance state. I've talked to other Europeans who say the same thing. It's an interesting hypothesis. I do know from personal experience, I'm much more likely to struggle with drowsiness in stop-and-go traffic than cruising down the interstate.

Blanket speed-limit laws take into consideration only two factors: fuel consumption (the primary reason why Europeans are considering lowering speed limits) and kinetic energy (which quadruples between 55 mph and 75 mph). They ignore so many other factors: outside conditions, skill of drivers, dramatic increase in auto safety over the past 30 years, etc. Something a lot of people don't know is that a cop can pull you over and ticket you for driving even at speeds under the speed limit, if he believes you are driving with greater speed than the conditions warrant. That being the case, I think that is how the speed laws should always be enforced: If you're driving too fast for the conditions, you get a ticket. On a bright sunny day in the country, 150 might well be a safe speed. Europeans do it all the time.

Driving over 100 mph in a suburban area is just asinine, however.

C'mon Formo, Peterson got caught doing 109mph in a 55mph zone.
That "I didn't realize I was going that fast" excuse is about as lame as it gets. He "screwed the pooch"...plain and simple.

Peterson told The Associated Press on Thursday that he got a little speeding ticket. I need to be more aware of the speed I was going and not let it happen again.

Bullshit........Personal accountability!

That is reckless to the extreme. I don't give a rat's ass if he endangered himself.
He endangered the lives of many innocent people around him.

If indeed Minnesota law says that he should lose his license for 6 months....damn straight...take it away.

It was a freakin' speeding ticket. He didn't crack a bartender over the head with a stripper pole.. He didn't organize nor partake in a stripper/hooker laden cruise of Lake Minnetonka. He wasn't drunk. He didn't have an unregistered gun on him. He didn't have any traces of any illegal drugs.

More guys at that age have driven up to 100MPH than any of the above list, I'll almost guarantee it. Sorry if I don't find his dumb decision to be all that horrible. The embarassment of him getting busted in the public eye will be a pretty decent penalty in of itself. Plus he'll most likely take the punishment that the team and the law will dish, too. Noncase, IMO

I'm not downplaying this. I'm calling it as I see it.

(Referencing your comment to Rock about how he and I should "get a hobby."

I HAVE a hobby...go look at my profile--It's even listed...

Interests:

Making vikesrule pay.

As Vikesrule himself pointed out in one of his more (in)famous polls, it's actually more along the lines of a job than a hobby, but as they say, "If you love what you do, you'll never work another day in your life."

Like Vikes stated, he didn't only endanger himself, but everyone on that road with him. It was an absolutely idiotic thing to do. Especially for someone who can hire a racing track just about every day to test the power of his car.

And we can debate this until the cows come home. But I also know that there's not many jobs that you'd get suspended/disciplined from by committing the same offense (unless you had a DOT-job). And I didn't even mention that. I don't mind if he doesn't get held out of a game, doesn't get suspended, that's all up to the Vikings. I don't care.

What I care about is that he's not above the law. Again, he was riding 105 mph on a, what? 55 Mph street? That's just ridiculous. You can't possibly tell me that he didn't know how fast he was going. The best he can do for me is that he thought he was going 90 instead of 105. Still 35 over the limit. And even then, it doesn't make it a good argument to defend yourself with. We could all go 90 on suburban roads, 'not realising how fast we're going'.
