1. Absent following that call, though, can the Christian be truly happy, though?
1A. And how do we figure out what He's calling us for, though. (absent burning bushes, roads to Damascus, and the like)

NSD: Ah, but can we be content if we can't figure out what he's calling us for?
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Be open to His leading. It doesn't always come with a knock upside the head. Sometimes it's subtle.
You may be in a certain job to be there to witness to someone. Maybe the way you handle your job will be an example to others on how a Christain handles adversity. Being a Christian doesn't mean everything will always be rosey. That would be EASY.
People watch you. If they know you profess to be a Christian, they are watching you, and will use how you do things to decide whether or not what you are saying is "real". Your walk talks more then your talk talks.

Be that example to others. Someday, when you get to Heaven, you may have someone come up to you and say "Thank you" for being a good example of what Christianity is.
You may be at a job you hate because YOU are the ONLY one that may be able to get through to someone about God's love.

Here's the question: A person hates 80 percent of his job and life. He probably complains a lot, but may not (since he also suffers from moderate social anxiety). Is he a self-absorbed whiner, or is God trying to tell him something? And how do you tell which it is?

Since I believe God gives us all the tools to find our own happiness, I don't think he is trying to tell this person anything unless they are living a life on the incorrect side of the word of the lord.

God has given each person a mind and a set of emotional triggers in life.. it is said persons responsibility to understand their triggers and interpret them.

I think said person needs to start taking into account what makes them happy and what they don't like in life. Then start to map out the low hanging fruit of there unhappiness first. Retake inventory again.. and take the next whack at the roots of unhappiness.

Sounds easier than reality with financial constraints and what not.. but start with the "low hanging fruit" first.. then work on the larger aspects of your displeasure's.

I will tell a little story about a ego filled teenager whom based his entire life and future around a game of pigskin. This kid was generally bigger, stronger and hungrier than most kids his age. As he started to hit the football field and he started to learn that he was better than most.. he started to become an ass.

One day.. off the field all that was taken away in a blink of the eye.. the game was no longer a realistic part of his life and future. For the better course of a couple of years he played the "why me" card and thought God was punishing him for his egotistical ways.

The kid started to push away all the other things he found enjoyable in life, became unhappy and started to accept this as his path.

It wasn't until his third year of college that he had enough, some things in life he had to accept, re focused on the things in life that made him happy and started reshaping his life. It was a long process as he let most things in his life slide, including school and work.

I had to focus on the "low hanging fruit" that I liked and didn't like.. and started right there. Soon, other things in life started to fall into place and the quality of life improved incrementally as days passed.

I am there again.. as my body is starting to tell me that it is time to make another round of changes.. first and foremost how to deal with an accelerated aging process on my joints from heavy use, wear and tear, and the toll that was placed on my body years ago in a wreck.

My ability to be mobile in my own skin is being challenged again.. many of my simple pleasures in life are being forced into change.. it is called life my friend.. just like the game I revolved around my whole life you have to adjust to the opposition ahead and make your own happiness.

Either that or let life chew you up and reduce it to a pile of excuses and complaints.

Man i can't resist sticking my nose in.
Strictly my opinion so not saying i'm right. I first believe happiness and joy are a big difference. The Bible talks often about Joyfullness but not happiness. While happiness is due to circumstance joy is in spite. I've learnt sorrow and joy are not seperate. As I've drawn tight to my Savior the biggest reward has been in the toughest times I've still had joy in my heart which can only come from a loving God. This quote can offend people but God doesn't care about our happiness, he's more concerned about our rightousness. I'm lucky to be constant positive person so it's easy for me to say you decide what to make of your situatuation but why stay in a place you feel useless. I'd pray about it and ask God where he wants me so I can serve him to the best I my abilities.
As far as hearing a calling, it may not always come in the form of a burning bush but if you meditate and pray about it you can trust the answer will come. The problem comes when people want answers from God but aren't willing to put anytime into seeking him.
Well I'm rambling so I'll quit but good question Wade

1. You mean, not following the calling, can a Christian be truly happy? If he/she knew her calling and deliberately not following it, I can't see how they could be truly happy.

1a. That's something you just know. I remember the time when I found my calling. It was something that I knew without a shadow of a doubt that it was the reason I was put on this Earth. It felt like I finally found what I was looking for. It's something I just KNEW. It'd be impossible for me to use a metaphor to draw a comparison..

EDIT: Maybe me finding out my calling was in the metaphoric form of a burning bush. After reading the previous posts, some Christians may be called in a different manner. In which case, I can only give you my perspective.

Some people seem to know their whole lives what they are supposed to do. Most though, it's not that easy.
Some people are just supposed to be the mop bucket. To not get all the glory here. To do the less pleasant job.
But every saved person is a member of the body of Christ.
Someone has to be the "little toe", right? But a little toe is a an important part of the body. The little toe does it's job, and doesn't get noticed. But it's STILL important.
