Bills reach out to Cowher about becoming coach

By Jason La Canfora | NFL Network

The Buffalo Bills, who are expected to meet with Mike Shanahan this week about their head-coaching position, also have contacted former Super Bowl-winning coach Bill Cowher, according to league sources.

However, Cowher informed the Bills that he isn't interested in speaking to any teams about potential jobs until after the season, according to the sources, and he could have several options available to him should he opt to return to coaching in 2010. Cowher is taking this position with any potential suitors, the sources said, out of respect to his current employer, CBS, and to those coaches who are still employed by teams seeking to make a change.

The Bills are making it clear to top candidates that they are willing to spend big bucks to land an elite coach, despite their small-market status. One source close to Cowher believes the compensation could reach the $10 million-per-season range based on early indications.

Cowher, who resides in North Carolina, is largely expected to be wooed by the Carolina Panthers should they opt not to bring back John Fox for the final season on his deal. The Houston Texans and Chicago Bears would excite Cowher as well, according to a source, should they opt to make a move.

Two sources close to Cowher believe he is more ready now than at any time since retiring after the 2006 season to return to coaching, but he will remain very selective about his next move.

The New York Jets and Cleveland Browns spoke to Cowher last offseason about their openings -- the coach strongly considered New York until having a change of thought, according to a league source, but he wasn't interested in the Cleveland job.

Browns owner Randy Lerner very likely will reach out to Cowher again as he interviews candidates to be a "football czar" there. However, Cowher isn't interested in management positions at this time (he would have strong views about which personnel people come with him to any team, however), but he would prefer to return in a coaching capacity, according to a league source.

Cowher went 149-90-1 in 15 seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers' coach and won a Super Bowl championship in the 2005 season.

When he can go through all of his options, I'm pretty sure that GB will grade out pretty high, if necessary.

The Bills will not.

I think that Shanahan might go there, especially since their defense is somewhat decent. He is one hell of an offensive mastermind.

If the Bears go out 6-10, which is a big possibility given their remaining schedule, I wouldn't be surprised if the McCluskeys finally smartened up and dumped Lovie for Cowher.

Where ever Bill decides to go.. he will want a large hand in the roster makeup of this franchise.. and if the reports coming out of TC this season are accurate (Smith cut) then it is clear that Ted clearly weighs the coaching input in greatly.. I think Cowher has earned the right to help set the table greatly.. but I still don't completely understand why he left the Steelers.. he had all that there.

But I care not.. if we for some reason decide to make a change in Packerland.. I think it is still a premium landing spot for any coach.. tradition doesn't run deeper anywhere.

But I think we are far from making a decision on the HC.. Mike McCarthy and company have earned the right to let this season play off and evaluate at that point.

I think the people calling for heads are going to be very disappointed at the end of the season. There is not a game on the remaining schedule that I think we can't win. In fact we should run the table, even though the game in Pittsburgh will be tough, but I'll be there for good luck so we should be OK.

Losing to TB should not have happen, nor the game to Cincinatti. We gave up a 3rd and forever that ended up being a 7 point drive. Rouse was cut immediately.

I don't know what it is about some GB fans, but I don't believe Ted Thompson and McCarthey are viewed as morons in other cities around the league. In fact I would venture to say that most people think we have built a solid corp of young players with a lot of better days ahead. I have a theory that we have become spoiled fans, but then I usually get myself in trouble for these views in this forum.

I have buddies that are Steeler fans and they don't think Cowher shits lightning bolts anymore. Lose the AFC championship game as many times as he has and you lose some fans and credibility.

I like Coach Chin better than Coach Double Talk. (Or better than Coach Double Chin (Holmgren) for that matter.) But count me among those who would rather someone else as the next head coach in the unlikely event that McCarthy is let go.

I don't want the last great coach. I want the next great coach. I don't want a guy who has X super bowl rings already. I want someone who is going to get X super bowl rings.

Briefly, in 2007, I thought that was going to be McCarthy. Now? If the Packers get rid of McCarthy, I want Thompson to go out and pick someone who I say "WTF?" at the time and get proven wrong.
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Depending on which Steelers team shows up.. You guys can beat them, but if they show up (especially on defense), you guys won't have much chance.

Also, don't get caught up saying you guys should have beaten Cincy.. They are a FAR superior team than they've been in recent years (2005 not withstanding). The Packers might have overlooked them a bit, but I think if you guys play them 10 times, you win 5.

What I think you guys need more of is a few veteran FAs. At least, just enough to keep McCarthy and Thompson around for a few years. Maybe the Vikings will continue to get your guys 'old and washed up future Hall of Famers'.

You talk like a guy who's team has won the super bowl. And our veteran washed up hall of famer sure is making your idiot coach look good, that and the referees swalling their flags every time he goes to pass the ball. I wonder if saving the Vikings in Minnesota is worth risking the credibility of the whole league?

Enjoy your year Formo. Your team has plenty of weaknesses. How many sacks does the great Jared Allen have when he isn't lined up against a backup GB left tackle?

How do I sound like my team won the Super Bowl? Just because I make correct assessments doesn't mean my team won the Super Bowl. But I can see how you can get the two confused.. ::roll:

Funny you mention how your washed up vet is making Chilly look good. I find it ironic how the Vikings finally get a real QB and they become relevant. Leads me to believe that Chilly actually was aware of what he was doing from day one. He just didn't have a QB. As of right now, I'd rather have Chilly than McCarthy. Each and every year Chilly's been the HC, his team improved by at least 2 wins. And as far as your referee statement.. Er, excuse, goes.. You have more to worry about than the zebras. Like, ohhh.. Finding a GM that will put together an offensive line for your current talent at QB? I dunno, just a thought.

I wonder if saving the Vikings in Minnesota is worth risking the credibility of the whole league?

"DakotaT" wrote:

LOL. That's funny. As if there aren't other teams in the league that ruin the credibility of the NFL.. Wait. That would be Rodger Goodell doing that, not the Vikings (or any other organization for that matter).

Enjoy your year Formo.

I've already enjoyed it. 2-0 versus your team. Good enough for me. Anything else after that is just frosting on the cake.

Coach Mora disagrees. But since you are in the know, please, enlighten me. No wait. Enlighten the rest of the league. They are the ones in need of it. =)

I looked it up. 3. That would put him 1.5 sacks behind your teams leader, Jenkins. And only half a sack behind your great Kampman. I guess it's a good thing for Allen that the league counts those games against the Packers. I know it's hard to swallow, but those were real games, no matter how much they looked like a college team beating on a HS team. 🙂

Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : NFL thought it would get more attention week preceding Super Bowl.
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Yes, the Pro Bowl. It was played Sunday before Super Bowl from 2010-2022
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : pro bowl
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : From 2010 to 2022, it was played on the Sunday before the Super Bowl

Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : seems to me the 49ers should have traded Aiyuk when they had the chance
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : if the Eagles get it down to the 1, do they Tush Push or give it to Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : 49ers have a money problem if they want to sign their QB
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Wait for real? Didn't he just get an extension two years ago?
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : 49ers gonna trade Deebo. Interesting
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Replays always never seem to show the holdings
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Great throw by Hurts
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Where Carter falls prey to bad off the field influences (to be clear, not saying he'd clip someone though)
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Had Carter not gone to Philly were they already had a lot of old college friends, he ends up in a similar spot to Aaron Hernandez
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : I think some of his coaches told scouts to stay away
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : the street racing incident+conditioning and motivation problems
beast (10-Feb) : Then Carter was street racing, where the other car crashed and people died... and other teams were scared to pick Carter for some reason
beast (10-Feb) : I think the Saints traded up, giving their next year 1st to the Eagles, and then they sucked and Eagles got the 10th overall pick
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : wtf Barkley?
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : Getting Carter and Nolan Smith in the first round in 2023 was pretty darn good
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : for some reason i'm thinking of a draft where the Eagles where in the mid 20s and a top player fell all the way to them
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think so. I would need to look it up. Think it may have been Carolina's pick.
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : i'm not sure who i'm thinking of now
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : oh fuck me i messed that up
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Jordan Davis was 13th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Carter was 9th overall
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles had 15th and 10th selections, moved to 13 and 9 to get Davis and Carter back to back
Zero2Cool (10-Feb) : Eagles traded up for Carter, didn't they?
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Obviously he was a huge risk but getting a top 5 talent on the dline in the mid 20s is fortuitous
Mucky Tundra (10-Feb) : Jalen Carter falling into their lap certainly helps
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : And we could only wish to have this type of D
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : It's not like Philly has had low draft picks, but has managed to get themselves a top notch pass rush. We spend so much draft capital of D
packerfanoutwest (10-Feb) : another crap halftime show
TheKanataThrilla (10-Feb) : I think it is over, but then I think of Atlanta and want Philly to go in with the same intensity in the second half
