According the JS blog, the Packers offered to sign Brohm to the active roster for the same terms that Buffalo offered.

Of course, I'd choose Buffalo were I Brohm, too, I think. I mean, he's never going to get anything other than preseason ops in GB.

He'll have more opportunity in Buffalo, but as far as learning from MM's QB school, I'd consider staying here if I was him. Say what you want about Mike McCarthy getting his team ready to play, but he is a great QB guru, no doubt about that.

It's not uncommon for a player to be labeled a "bust" on one team, only to be cut and find success elsewhere. This leads me to ask, what is a bust? Is it a player who doesn't have the talent required to succeed? Or is it a player who just wasn't fortunate enough to land in a situation conducive to his success? Or is it, as I suspect may often be the case, a play who secretly doesn't want to play for a particular team but doesn't have the leverage of a John Elway or an Eli Manning to go where he really wants to play?

Brian Brohm was once hailed as a probable first overall pick in the draft, but then he fell into the second round. He knew he'd never be given a legitimate chance to compete for the starting slot in Green Bay, short of a career-ending injury to Aaron Rodgers. Is it possible he never tried all that hard and was secretly hoping for a ticket out of Green Bay?

Perhaps it's an unjust thing to ask and obviously, we'll never know, but if he turns out to have a decent career elsewhere, I will wonder.

Brohm is a bust in the sense that he couldn't beat out Matt Flynn for the back up job. I think we all agree that he looked better this year than last---"poise-wise", but I don't think any of us thought he looked better than Flynn. I know your theory is just that...a theory, but imo would not be a logical way for him to go.

Those QB's are an extremely valuable commodity, and they know it... IF they have "IT". Every snap of the football in preseason is a miniature try-out for the entire league, not just the Pack. I would seriously doubt that Brohm would squander that with a lack of effort or a desire to move on.

I look at Russel out in Oakland and just remind myself (again) about just how hard it is to evaluate what these guys are going to do at this level. It just did not seem possible for Russel to NOT be a premier QB in this league coming out of college... Yet here we are... That is a bust- A major bust--so far.

The "so far" is important, too. The developmental curve is all over the map for these QB's. One "sure thing" might take years to get it, while you have another that throws a TD his first snap as an NFL QB.

I'm going back to the karma thing, that's all I really got for an explanation.

I figured someone would say this and it certainly is the major counterargument to my theory. I do know, however, that when people desperately want out of a situation, they aren't always logical. When I think about some of the bizarre tactics people I knew used to get out of the army, I just shake my head.

As for JaMarcus Russell, I remember reading cautionary articles about him even before he was drafted. So opinion wasn't unanimous about him.

lol so you think Brohm was no trying his hardest? Can you explain his happy feet then? Was that an act that he was antsy in the pocket fumbling through his progressions while doing a tap dance?

I clearly and unequivocally stated it was a speculation and not an opinion. It was more of a contemplation on busts in general and didn't apply to Brohm specifically.

Surprisingly I knew each of those words. I'm proud of myself.

I know what you're saying. I just don't think it holds much merit. A good argument for that would be Brandon Marshall in training camp. However, he didn't want out of Denver, he wanted more money.

I'd be more worried about the coaching not being able to channel that displeasure into something positive ... or not even noticing the displeasure in said player.

Well, it's to bad we basically wasted a second round pick on him, but at least to this point in his career, he was not worth a spot on the 53-man roster.

The Bills franchise is pretty much going to be cleaning house after the season anyways. They lost to the freakin' Browns for crying out loud! Brohm was nice insurance on the practice squad, but it was pretty evident with Rodgers emergence he wasn't going to be the team's long-term answer at QB. He'll get a better chance to play in Buffalo, although Craig Nall went over there too and never really made much of his chance either.

Good luck to Brian! Hopefully he'll have better luck over there then he did in Green Bay. Fortunately Matt Flynn has progressed decently so far, but it'll be tough if Rodgers goes down now and they'll have to bring a street free agent in for backup duties instead of promoting Brohm from the practice squad now.

What bothers me is didn't we get this pick when Corey Williams left? So, we got essentially nothing for Corey Williams. That's not good at all.

Then again, the Browns don't appear to have got much either. 🙂
