Ahman Green wasnt ready to give up his career in the National Football League. But by the middle of October, 11 months had passed since the 32-year-old running backs last game, and Green admits he was starting to think about another line of work.

It was tough, he said. But in the back of my head was always (the thought), Stay in shape, be ready to go at the drop of a dime and a phone call.

Nothing materialized following a tryout with the St. Louis Rams in August, but Green continued to work out while maintaining his residence in De Pere. When the phone finally rang again, Green Bay Packers director of football operations Reggie McKenzie was on the line offering a tryout.

My number one goal was to get picked up by Green Bay, said Green, who enjoyed a stellar seven-year career with the Packers before signing a lucrative free agent contract with the Houston Texans in 2007. I knew I had a good shot because I was in shape.

Green felt even better after seeing Packers officials react to his Oct. 19 workout. I got those looks and nods of OK, hes still got it. Hes still the guy we thought he was when he left in 06.

Packers running backs coach Edgar Bennett confirms that Green was very impressive.

He looked good, he looked healthy, he looked strong, said Bennett. You knew right then and there, he still had quickness, change of direction, still had burst. We already knew he was instinctive. And he did a very good job as far as catching the football.

Green officially signed a contract on Oct. 21 and was in uniform 10 days later against the Minnesota Vikings. On Nov. 8 against Tampa Bay, he ran for 45 yards on six carries to break Jim Taylors coveted franchise record of 8,207 career rushing yards.

It means a lot, said Green.

Former Packers fullback William Henderson and ex-guard Marco Rivera were the first to send congratulatory texts after Green set the record.

Its more of a team accomplishment, said Green. I couldnt have done it without William. I couldnt have done it without Mike Flanagan, Mike Wahle, Mark Tauscher, Chad (Clifton), Scottie Wells. Its a long list of guys that basically made my job easy.

When Green left the Packers for Houston 2 years ago he was 46 yards short of Taylors record and figured he was destined to remain No. 2 on the list, the same place he holds on Nebraskas all-time rushing list behind Mike Rozier.

Green said he made a business decision but also hated the idea of leaving the Packers. His two injury-plagued years with the Texans only intensified those feelings.

Green never lost his affection for the Packers. He spent offseasons and bye weeks in the Green Bay area. I always kept my home here, he said. I always liked Green Bay.

The limited playing time in Houston was actually a blessing because Green now has unusually fresh legs for a back his age.

I dont put any limitations on that guy, said Bennett.

Green gives the Packers a proven veteran to spell starter Ryan Grant. He also possesses some intangible assets that could prove valuable in the locker room.

He brings an attitude with him when he comes to play out on the football field, said Bennett. Its all about winning and competing at a high level.

Green has a message for the skeptics who consider him washed up. Ive always beat the odds my entire life, he said. Just tell me I cant do it, Im going to go do it.

Green just wanted another chance, and hes happy to be home.

Give him the rock.

That's what I see, I'm really diggin' the concept of screens and dump-offs to Ahman.

I happen to like it when I see our running back mowing somebody over, and Ahman still looks very much like just the guy to do precisely that.

Ahman is the best. He can run the screen perfectly

Like to see Ahman get 10-12 touches a game, mix him in with Grant and Jackson.

His effort is commendable, a couple of times since he has been back he has shown tenacity to gain us a couple more yards.

I would love for Ryan Grant to pick up some of Ahman Green's characteristics; Ryan Grant may not have breakout speed but his major strength, underutilized right now; is his ability to plow through people.

Grant seems to be real tentative after the hand off, a couple of baby steps, head down, and right into traffic.

Me thinks give Ahman the ball, and show the starter how the record holder does things.

We're set at RB for this season, but I'm kind of more interested to see how the position shakes out during the off season.

Do we extend Green for next season despite his age and stick with Grant and Jackson.

It is thought we may draft a RB and if we do who misses out? It seems too early to dump 2nd round pick Jackson, he's done well when given the chance.

Grant apears to be at least good enough for the #2 spot and both these guys have more upside than Green.

I'm pleased to have Green with us this season but unless he really breaks out I don't see him sticking around long term if we draft another HB.

I'd rather see him get 5 screens than 10-12 rushes. We as a team really underutilize the screen pass and Green is our best RB for the job.

If you only send Green in to do screens it really goes a long ways towards telling the defense what you're doing. He needs to get consistent handoffs if you don't want defenses looking screen all the way everytime he's in the backfield.

I forget though, is Green decent as far as RBs go at pass blocking? If you brought him in on obvious passing downs that would help alleviate some of the "duh" factor. You just can't run the same type of play 80% of the time you have one particular player on the field.

Ahman is one hell of a pass blocker. He IS the kind of back that needs reps to get in a "groove", historically...

So give him the rock.

Completely agree notice I said "touches", not "rushes", Ahman was a great screen guy, a great pass blocker, nobody(maybe dhazer  ), expects Ahman to be the guy he was in his prime, but IMHO he could show enough flashes to help the offense.

Mix it up when Ahman is in, keep him in to block, send him out on screens, or just give him the ball and let him do his thing.

Starting to turn cold, the running game wil be important down the stretch, Grant,Jackson, Green....our own little 3 headed monster.
