What was the reason for Brandt leaving the Packers again?

I don't have any links from the past, but I vividly remember a couple of articles that stated a major reason for Brandt's departure was his reluctance to get more involved with the personnel side of things.

First draft after Russ Ball was hired, Ted Thompson in one of his interviews explicitly credited Russ Ball for one of the trades that was made (I think it was trading down with the Jets, and getting Jordy). He said it was Russ who was working the lines and using some of his past connections to figure out who might be interested in getting back into the first round, and then Russ also initiated discussions with the Jets.

If you ask me, if Ted wanted someone of Brandt's caliber to stick around - he would've found a way to do it. Brandt seems to suggest that he was given the impression that the organization did not want him back necessarily.

Anyything Andrew Brandt writes is worth reading. I'm glad I went to the link, because you chopped off the first section of the article. Also, I was able to read the comments after the article, which are worthwhile.

I wonder what would've happened if management had been more upfront with Favre about not wanting him back for the 2008 season. I agree with Brandt that it may have been a more honorable way to handle the situation, and yet, in the end, I don't know that it would've made much of a difference. I suppose the ugliness might've happened sooner rather than later.

He doesn't get into how Favre was demanding to dictate to Ted Thompson who the head coach should be, what players to pick up, the offensive philosophy, etc. Brandt isn't going to put that type of stuff in his column.

I think that the Packers deserved more from Brett, too. The fans certainly deserved more. It's sad to see a grown man act like a child. Just stand up and tell us what you want, what you need. Don't expect people to read your mind. It seems as if so much of this stuff, perceived indifference, imagined persecution, was all in his head. I mean, come on, Ted Thompson didn't stop by on his way home from the Senior Bowl so he retired? Give me a break. He complained that they pestered him too much by asking him if he wants to come back, and he complains when they leave him alone to let him think about it. There's no making this guy happy.

My impression at the time was that Brandt did something "power struggle" wise to try to get the job as TT's boss. Not sure about that though.
However, Brandt was also apparently leaking things to the media. Ted Thompson didn't like that at all.
There could have been a bit of a power struggle between the two, with Brandt trying to leapfrog Ted Thompson in the hierarchy.

Two of the comments are mine.

The only thing negative I stated was speculation (since Andrew speculated, so can I) that Brett's ego and insecurities were used against him in the sense that he interpreted silence--as in not making the (required) annual pilgrimage down to Kiln to sit at the Lord's throne (I didn't say that part, lol)--

as not being wanted anymore.

A passive but tacit (and perhaps the most classy way) of letting him know that the Packers were moving on without him.

His ego and insecurities did him in as a Packer...That is what I said.

Could someone help me out with the timeline of events? Didn't the Packers front office make an attempt at getting Brett to unretire and recommit to coming back for another season?

The entire soap opera was so vast and the number of new developments were so plentiful -- it's difficult to keep track of the clusterf**k. I do recall, sans specific evidence, that they recruited him after the teary-eyed retirement. He said no; they moved on.

I'm not making this up, right?

-March 6: Favre's tearful press conference. McCarthy says he is surprised at how honest Favre is about the reasons behind his decision -- particularly about not being able to commit 100 percent to football.

-Week of March 24: During the coaching staff's spring break, Packers offensive line coach James Campen, whose in-laws live in New Orleans, goes up to visit Favre in Mississippi on March 26. On the 27th, Campen tells McCarthy Favre is having second thoughts and McCarthy should call him.

He does, and learns that Favre indeed is having second thoughts. McCarthy and Thompson decide they will welcome him back. They secure a private jet from a Packers board member to visit Favre in person and seal the deal.

-March 29: Favre calls McCarthy to deliver a message: Thanks, but no thanks.

"He felt at this point we had reached a point of closure," McCarthy said. "Those were his words. And he was going to stick with his initial decision."

Yes, you are right about that.

Zero2Cool (9h) : Still HC positions available out there. I wonder if Hafley pops up for one
Zero2Cool (9h) : Trent Baalke is out as the Jaguars GM.
dfosterf (11h) : Jeff Hafley would have been a better choice, fortunately they don't know that. Someone will figure that out next off season
Zero2Cool (12h) : Aaron Glenn Planning To Take Jets HC Job
dfosterf (13h) : Martha- C'est mon boulot! 😁
Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you
wpr (13h) : Z, glad you are feeling better.
wpr (13h) : My son and D-I-L work for UM. It's a way to pick on them.
Zero2Cool (13h) : Thank you. I rarely get sick, and even more rarely sick to the point I can't work.
wpr (13h) : Beast- back to yesterday, I CAN say OSU your have been Michigan IF the odds of making the playoffs were more urgent.
dfosterf (13h) : Glad to hear you are feeling a bit better.
Zero2Cool (14h) : I've been near death ill last several days, finally feel less dead and site issues.
Zero2Cool (14h) : It is a big deal. This host is having issues. It's frustrating.
Martha Careful (14h) : just kidding...it was down
Martha Careful (14h) : you were blocked yesterday, due to a a recalcitrant demeanor yesterday in the penalty box for a recalcitrant demeanor
dfosterf (14h) : Was that site shutdown on your end or mine? No big deal, just curious
beast (21-Jan) : That way teams like Indiana and SMU don't make the conference championships by simply avoiding all the other good teams in their own confere
beast (21-Jan) : Also, with these "Super Conferences" instead of a single conference champion, have 4 teams make a Conference playoffs.
beast (21-Jan) : Also in college football, is a bye week a good or bad thing?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : The tournament format was fine. Seeding could use some work.
beast (21-Jan) : You can't assume Ohio State would of won the Michigan game...
beast (21-Jan) : Rankings were 1) Oregon 2) Georgia 3) Texas 4) Penn State 5) Notre Dame 6) Ohio State, none of the rest mattered
wpr (21-Jan) : Texas, ND and OSU would have been fighting for the final 2 slots.
wpr (21-Jan) : Oregon and Georgia were locks. Without the luxury of extra playoff berths, Ohios St would have been more focused on Michigan game.
wpr (21-Jan) : Zero, no. If there were only 4 teams Ohio State would have been one of them. Boise St and ASU would not have been selected.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : So that was 7 vs 8, that means in BCS they never would made it?
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : A great game. Give ND credit for coming back, although I am please with the outcome.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : FG to make it academic
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : and there's the dagger
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooo 8 point game with 4 minutes to go!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ooooooooohhhhhh he missed!
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Ooooo that completion makes things VERY interesting
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Game not over yet
beast (21-Jan) : Oh yeah, Georgia starting quarterback season ending elbow injury
beast (21-Jan) : Sadly something happened to Georgia... they should be playing in this game against Ohio State
beast (21-Jan) : I thought Ohio State and Texas were both better than Notre Dame & Penn State
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame getting rolled
Martha Careful (21-Jan) : Ohio State just got punched in the gut. Lets see how they respond
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Notre Lame vs the Luckeyes, bleh
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : Oh snap!!!
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Even Stevie Wonder can see that.
Zero2Cool (21-Jan) : Nah, you see Lions OC leaving to be HC of Bears is directly related to Packers.
Mucky Tundra (21-Jan) : ohhhhhhh Zero is in TROUBLE
packerfanoutwest (21-Jan) : Zero, per your orders, check Bearshome, not packershome
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Then he'll land with another team and flourish.
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Ben going to Bears. He'll be out in 3 years.
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : what's so funny?
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Zero2Cool (20-Jan) : Bears are finalizing a deal to hire Ben Johnson as their head coach. (via @tompelissero )
Mucky Tundra (20-Jan) : Looks like Lions OC Ben Johnson is going to be the Bears coach
